older. In 17 years, in 2005,
there will be 100,000.
"But we should not exag-
gerate the concerns of the
democracies we love the
most." Will credits President
Reagan "for showing that we
can count on Israel no matter
what government it has
tomorrow" and he admonish-
ed the audience "to let Israel
know you support them. You
have to have lots of powder,
and you have to keep it dry."
Will answered several ques-
tions from the audience at the
conclusion of his speech. He
said Preisdent-elect George
Bush and his Chief of Staff
James Baker were good peo-
ple and not anti-Israel. But
they have to be watched
because they do not have the
attachment to Israel that
Regan has. "They are in-
telligent and decent fellas
that bear watching," he said.
He warned that the more
"lawyered, the more grada-
tions" there are in statements
by the PLO toward peace with
Israel, "the less it means." He
also acknowledged that the
national budget deficit in the
U.S. will put pressure on
the foreign aid budget. "If
Congress has to choose bet-
ween tanks and wheelchairs,
between schools and foreign
aid, you know what the deci-
sion will be."

New York — Father Bruce
Ritter, founder of New York's
Covenant House, and Los
Angeles writer Malka
Drucker, are the first prize
winners of the fifth Janusz
Korczak Literary Competi-
tion for books about, or aimed
at, children.
The competition, sponsored
by the Internatioonal Center
for Holocaust Studies of the
Anti-Defamation League of
B'nai B'rith, honors Korczak,
a Polish-Jewish physician and
Warsaw orphanage director
who chose to die in the Nazi
gas chambers at Treblinka in
1942 rather than forsake 200
children entrusted to his care.
Father Ritter's book, Cove-
nant House (Doubleday), won
first prize in the category of
adult books about children.
First prize for books aimed at
young readers went to
Drucker for Eliezer Ben-
