movements: communism,
socialism, social democracy.
Secular humanist univer-
salism seeks to dispose of
Jewish particularism. For
such people, Judaism — and
in fact religion itself — is
threatening. .Urbanized
American Jews have flocked
to universalist ideologies.
At the same time, the
liberal (mainline) Christian
churches moving to the left
found common ground with
assimilated Jews. They
developed the common wor-
ship of secular humanism
stressing such matters as
civil rights, free choice on
abortion and a natural affec-
tion for the "underdog" —
deemed to be the Thrid
World. Guilt over the West's
"good life" prompted
Quakers, liberal Jews and an
assortment of other mainline
Christians to find a way to
atone for the "sins" commit-
ted by America and pro-
Western Israel against the
Palestinians.
On the other hand,
Evangelicals like Jerry
Falwell and Jesse Helms are
committed to Israel and sup-
port Jewish rights to Judea,
Samarai and Gaza.
This helps explain why
Israel's warm relations with
the Evangelical Christians
began in 1977, not in 1948. In
1977, under Menachim
Begin, the relationship
flourished. Falwell was a
welcomed and honored guest
in Jerusalem, as was Pat'
Robertson and others.
Unfortunately, in the eyes
of most Jews, Evangelicals
have been seen as
"backwoods fundamen-
talists" and "rednecks," as
the same people who for cen-
turies viciously persecuated
them in the ghettos of Europe
and the backwaters of Poland
and Lithuania.
Conversely, Dr. M. William
Howard, president of Na-
tional Council of Churches,
said in an interview that his
organization endorsed direct
talks with the Palestine
Liberation Organization
since 1974. The NCC has also
praised former U.S. am-
bassador Andrew Young for
his Middle East negotiations,
which included secret talks
with the PLO.
An examination of Jesse
Helms' record on Israel shows
him to be one of the staun-
chest friends of the Jewish
state and of Jewish
nationalism.
A Baptist deacon, Helms
stated in a recent article:
"When you consider that
Israel is on the front line for
the defense of the West, and
in facing the Soviet Union
directly in the guise of Syria,

Jesse Helms: 'Concessions would
only whet the Arabs' appetite'

and is our first defense
against anti-American
governments in Iraq, Iran,
Ethiopia, Yemen, and
Afghanistan, then it becomes
apparent that Israel is really
our only reliable ally in the
Middle East."
He also pointed out, "There
is no piece of paper sufficient-
ly strong to uphold regional
arrangements that do not
meet the dictates of common
sense. The animosity of the
neighboring Arab countries
does not spring from concern
over the present inhabitants
of the so-called West Bank, or
the fact that Israel exercises
administrative and military
control over that territory.
The animosity springs from
the fact that Israel proper ex-
ists. Concessions on the West
Bank territory would only
whet the appetite of animosi-
ty, not appease it."
Helms also led voting in the
Senate for a resolution to
fund Jewish, as well as Arab,
residents of Judea and
Samaria and to move the U.S.
Embassy from Tel Aviv to
Jerusalem.
It has been alleged that
Falwell's support of Israel
stems from the Evangelist
desire to bring the Jews to
Zion to receive Jesus upon his
return.
In his book Jerry Falwell
and the Jews, Merrill Simon
asked Falwell, "Are you and
your church aggressively
seeking to convert Jews to
Christianity?"
Falwell responded, "We
have no such specialized
ministry. We have no Jewish
mission operating in New
York or anyplace else."
Evangelical Christian sup-
port for Israel means that
Americans for a Safe Israel,
for instance, can speak to the
media and to the U.S. govern-
ment — both the legislative
