TO OUR FRIENDS IN THE DETROIT JEWISH COMMUNITY:

Last week the world witnessed a terrible tragedy in the Family of Man: a
devastating earthquake which leveled the capital of Soviet Armenia, taking
thousands upon thousands of lives, and leaving many more with neither
hope nor home.

The Darakjian family is helping spearhead the emergency relief effort here
in Detroit. The immediate need is for medical supplies and equipment to
ease the suffering, and to keep the mounting death toll from climbing higher.

We need your help. For many years the Detroit Jewish community has
distinguished itself as America's humanitarian leader. Through your unfail-
ing outpouring to the United Jewish Appeal, to the City of Hope, to ORT,
to innumerable other causes, you have proven your universal commitment
to the sustenance and dignity of life. Now we ask you to join the worldwide
effort to relieve some of the suffering brought about by this vast devastation.

A kind Detroit humanitarian has already donated a fleet of transport planes
to speed life-saving medical supplies to their goal. Please join this vital ef-
fort to fill these planes with the bandages, the anesthetics, the medicines,
and all the other life-giving materials they so desperately need.

Tragically, many are beyond our help. We appeal to each of you to do
whatever you personally can to stanch the blood and soothe the suffering
of those who remain.

The Armenian Relief Society (A.R.S.), a nonprofit, nonpolitical, nonsectarian
organization, is coordinating this effort. Please send your check today, made
out to "A.R.S. Earthquake Fund," to:
