Call The Jewish News 354-6060 Jerusalem — Fossilized pollen grains taken from the sediment of the Sea of Galilee are giving testimony regar- ding events that took place in the area going back more than 5,000 years, according to an archaeological researcher at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Uri Baruch has been analyzing the pollen grains of the oak, carob, olive and other trees found in five-meter-deep core sediment taken from the southern shore region of the Sea of Galilee. The samples yielded 135 types of pollen grains. Radiocarbon dating deter- mined that the oldest of these .fossilized grains goes back some 5,500 years. Examination of the grain fossils from various epochs shows the influence of man on the vegetational life of the area, sometimes indicating intense agricultural activity, and in other periods, in which the population declined, the spread of natural, wild plant growth. For example, Baruch con- cluded from analyses of fossilized grains dating from the fourth millennium BCE that the region around the Sea of Galilee was more densely forested by oaks then than is the case today. In his examination of the core samples dating from the third millennium BCE, the Early Bronze Age, Baruch discovered an upsurge in the amount of olive pollen grains. This was a prosperous period in the Holy Land, during which many, large, fortified communities were establish- ed, some of which were heavi- ly involved in olive growing. Conversely, the general decline which historians at- test to the period which followed, extending to approx- imately 1800 BCE, is sup- ported by Baruch's discovery of a decline in the quantity of olive pollen grains. When more prosperous times returned, during the Hellenistic period beginning in 350 BCE and extending in- to the second century CE, there is again an increase in olive tree pollen grains, re- flecting the elevation of olives to the status of a major crop, with much of the yield devoted to production of olive oil. Also appearing during this period are traces of the rise in the raising of grape vines, walnuts and carob, as testified to in the writings of Josephus Flavius and in the writings of the compilers of the Talmud. The decline that set in following the Bar-Kochba revolt of the second century CE can be seen in a lowered incidence of olive grains and a rise in grains of wild scrub thorns, which apparently spread in the areas in which agricultural cultivation was abandoned. Much later, severe destruc- tion of the surrounding forests under Ottoman rule in the 18th and 19th centuries can be seen in Baruch's samples, as can the recovery of horticulture in the area in more recent decades as the result of extensive agricul- tural activity, coupled with conservation efforts. -I SINGLE LIFE l■ Dec. 24 Dance Slated The Only Spot In Town dance will be held at 9 p.m. Dec. 24 at the Jewish Com- munity Center (Maple/Drake Building).
