"Who Is A Jew" amendment.

But the claim advanced by
some American Jewish
leaders that the "religious
issue" be removed from the
political arena, betrays an ig-
norance of the make-up of
Israeli society.
Dr. Daniel J. Elazar, an emi-
nent American-born Israeli
scholar, observed: "It is not
just a religious issue. When it
comes to the question who is
part of the Jewish people, you
cannot separate between the
religious and the national in
a Jewish state."
Commenting on the likeli-
hood that some Jews will
withdraw their financial sup-
port of the Jewish Agency, via
federations, as an expression
of discontent, Elazar said it
.would be "absolutely the
wrong way to communicate
the message." The Jewish
Agency, which receives UJA
funds, is not dominated by the
ultra-Orthodox and, accor-
ding to Elazar, provides the
major vehicle for American
Jewry to exert its influence.
"To give up a position of
strength out of ignorance
would be too bad," he said.
It is fallacious to conclude
that Israel is turning into a
theocracy. Indeed, thousands
of Israelis are demonstrating
against yielding to the
demands of the religious bloc.
In addition, an unprece-
dented outpouring of mail has
reached President Chaim
Herzog, urgning him to exer-
cise his moral authority
toward the establishment of a
broad-based coalition-
government immune from
ultra-Orthodox pressures. "As
long as there is a community
of Jews in America who want
to be Jewish, they will want
to relate to Israel," Elazar
said. "We need each other."

Correction

The "Friendly Faces" arti-
cle (Dec. 2) referred to a new
mother suffering post-natal
problems and depression.
Although Mrs. Debra Yashin-
sky agreed to be photograph-
ed with her new baby for the
article, she is not the person
referred to in the article. The
Jewish News apologizes for
any confusion caused by the
photograph and the story.
