SINAI SURPRISE

ANNETTTA STOKES,
BARBARA HOLLIE and
MARGARITA GO, all
nurses at Sinai Hospital on
Unit 35, planned a surprise
42nd anniversary party for
patient HARRY MULLER
and his wife, ELAINE.
KAREN MULLER, their
daughter, attended the
party. The couple
celebrated with a cake and
sparkling cider. The
hospital gave the Mullers a
plaque with a Hebrew
saying about healing. His
physician, DR. MELVYN
RUBENFIRE, chairman of
the department of medicine,
also congratulated the
couple. Muller is looking
forward to his next surprise
— going home.

LIVELY LUNCHEON

Chanukah songs and
Broadway melodies
highlighted the 59th
annual donor luncheon for
the Women of Jewish
National Fund of Detroit.
The Bel Canto Choral
Society, directed by
DENISE OGDEN, provided
the audience of nearly 300
with songs in Hebrew,
Yiddish and English, from
show tunes to traditional
melodies. More than
$95,000 was netted at the
luncheon, which was held
to raise funds for a fully-
equipped fire engine for
Israel. Spotted in the crowd
were RUTH SELVAN,
IRENE RODMAN and
MARY MUST.

DESIGNER JEWELRY

The Michigan Jewelers
Association recently hosted
international jewelry
designer JOSE HESS at a
press breakfast at the
Somerset Inn. Hess inform-
ed the audience that
designer jewelry boutiques
within retail stores will be
the latest trend. Some of
the retailers listening in-
tently were: LAWRENCE
ALLAN, LINK WACHLER
and DOUG SCHUBOT.
Jules Schubot Jewellers

tion for Hess and DEBRA
PICKREL, fashion mer-

Kirkpatrick
Sees No Peace

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Jeanne
Kirkpatrick, former U.S. am-
bassador to the United Na-
tions, ruled out the possibili-
ty of Israeli Arab peace in the
foreseeable future because of
what she contends is a lack of
commitment to democracy by
the Palestinians.
But two Israeli scholars in-
dicated that Israel has to
meet the current Palestinian
peace offensive with a credi-
ble policy initiative of its own.
They and others spoke at
the first session of the fourth
annual Jeanne Kirkpatrick
Forum at Aviv University,
named in honor of the former
envoy who was an outspoken
friend of Israel in the world
organization. The theme of
the forum is "The Year 2000:
Prospects and Possibilities for
Arab-Israeli Cooperation?'
Kirkpatrick, known for her
ultra-conservative view of
world affairs, insisted there
are no prospects for peace un-
til the Palestinians conform
to democratic values.
She also said that both
Israel and the United States
emerged from their recent
elections with divided govern-
ments, leaving both countries
without the ability to under-
take policy departures that do
not enjoy a broad consensus.
Professor Itamar
Rabinovitch, director of Tel
Aviv University's • Dayan
Center, observed that the
Palestine Liberation Organi-
zation is changing its tone
and language to satisfy
American conditions.
Dr. Shai Feldman, of the
university's Jaffee Center for
Strategic Studies, said a
serious situation will develop
if the PLO's new tone suc-
ceeds in Washington but
Israel responds with a
negative position.
