Local BBYO Protests Amended Law Of Return The Great Lakes AZA Council voted at its December meeting to send a letter to Israeli officials opposed to amending Israel's Law of Return. The letter calls the proposal to amend the law, which would withhold the guarantee of automatic Israeli citizenship from peo- ple moving to Israel converted to Judaism by Reform or Con- servative rabbis, "destructive to the unity of the Jewish peo- ple," and states "this issue should not be resolved by political means." The letter was sent to - Israel's Prime Minister Yit- zhak Shamir; Foreign Minis- ter Shimon Peres; President Chaim Herzog; Moshe Arad, ambassador to the United States; and Rabbi Eric Yoffee, ARZA-UAHC in New York. December is Social Action Month for Michigan Region, B'nai B'rith Girls. As part of Project Rainbow, a competi- tion led by Great Lakes BBG Council S'ganit (Vice Presi- dent) Beth Cousens (Glazer BBG), all 17 BBG chapters and Wallenberg BBYO can earn points towards winning a surprise gift in the spring by conducting programs with a social action prupose this month. These include visiting the Holocaust Memorial Center, downtown museums and discussions on current issues including those of con- cern to all teenagers. Jewish History Quiz Winners Announced The results of the first an- nual Jewish History Quiz, sponsored by the Walter and Lea Field Jewish History Fund of the Jewish Historical Society, were announced at a city-wide assembly at Con- gregation Shaarey Zedek. Awards were given out to win- ners from 32 participating classes from 13 schools. Students who took part in the quiz answered questions taken mostly from Walter Field's book, A People's Epic, plus an essay question on a Jewish topic of their choice. Two winners from each class were given cash awards while others received certificates of recognition. The Merkaz, the Layman's Association of the Vaad Horabonim, announces its eighth annual dinner will take place on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Michigan Inn. The program will feature a panel of kashrut authorities who will discuss major issues affecting today's kosher consumer. The panelists will be Rabbi Moshe Heinemann of the Star-K in Baltimore, which supervises food product com- panies across the country such as Celestial Seasonings Tea, many restaurants in Miami Beach and Pompeiian Olive Oil; Rabbi Avrohom Teichman, the rabbinic ad- ministrator of Igud Hakashrust of Los Angeles and the rov of Agudath Israel of Los Angeles; and Rabbi Beryl Broyde, the kashrut ad- ministrator of the Vaad Horabonim of Detroit. Questions will be of a general and Jewish nature. Outstanding leadership among new BBYOers will be recognized with the Rookie of the Year Award by both the Great Lakes AZA and BBG Councils. The award will recognize first-year members of AZA and BBG who have best involved themselves in BBYO programs. Each chapter will nominate its own rookie of the year. Winners from each council — AZA and BBG — will be an- nounced at the council in- stallation at the end of the programming year. Each will be awarded the opportunity to attend the fall conclave the following year free of charge. Zahav BBG of Farmington Hills and Southfield will hold its annual "Chinese Auction" fund-raiser Dec. 26 during the BBYO regional convention. Dancers Due At Emanu-EI The Hora Aviv Israeli Folkdance Troupe will per- form Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Zhmple Emanu-El. The pro- gram will be a multi-media presentation focusing on the diversity of ethnic groups which have affected modern Israeli dance: Eastern Euro- pean Chasidic dance, Yemenite dance of the Jews from both North and South Yemen, the debka dance of the Arab Israeli population, and the hora dance of the Sabras — Jews born in the land of Israel. The troupe consists of Bela Greenbaum, director; Judy Appel, Michel Asulin, Yehudah Elimelech, Shelley Komer Jackier, Fay Knoll, Eli Shalom and Janelle Teger.
