I UP FRONT I

to Israel by three women who,
like Huffstutter, have a par-
ticular interest in the issue.
They all underwent Reform or
Conservative conversions on-
ly to learn, as Huffstutter ex-
plains it, that they "weren't
really Jewish."
Huffstutter's interest in
Judaism began when she was
preparing to enter a convent.
Studying the Bible and the
New Testament left her with
many questions that were not
warmly received by the
mother superior.
"I was told," she said, "that
I showed a lack of faith."
Curious to learn more
about Judaism, Huffstutter
asked colleagues at work
where she could meet Jews.
They recommended a deli in
Southfield.
The deli owner directed
Huffstutter to a Conservative
rabbi, with whom she took
classes. "And the more I
studied, the more I wanted to
become Jewish," she said.
Huffstutter decided to con-
vert. Her rabbi, she said, did
not tell her that her Conser-
vative conversion would not
be universally recognized.
Huffstutter found that out
herself after she read a
brochure on the laws of fami-
ly purity. "I asked my rabbi,
`Where does it say in the
rIbrah that we don't have to do
this anymore?"
"Don't ask so many ques-
tions," he responded. It
reminded Huffstutter of her
experience with the mother
superior.
Prompted by a Reform
Jewish friend who told her,
"You want to learn about
Jewish law? The only ones
who know it are the Or-
thodox," Huffstutter turned
to an Orthodox rabbi.
The rabbi told Huffstutter
that despite her sincere in-
terest in Judaism and her
observance of kashrut and
Shabbat, she was not Jewish.
Huffstutter was deeply
distressed. But now, she said,
she understands "he had no
choice. He had to tell me the
truth. And I realized that ac-
cording to the very Torah I
sought, I wasn't Jewish."
So Huffstutter began to
study further, and more than
a year ago underwent an Or-
thodox conversion.
Today, Huffstutter is
outspoken in her criticism of
Reform and Conservative rab-
bis who, she said, "survive by
preying upon the ignorance of
their people."
Potential converts to
Judaism are particularly
vulnerable, Huffstutter said.
Not only do Conservative and
Reform rabbis neglect to tell
them their conversions will
not be recognized by the Or-

Miriam Huffstutter: 'I'll take Torah'

thodox, they are often lax in
educating would-be converts
about Judaism.
For her own Conservative
conversion, Huffstutter wrote
a paper "Why I Want To Be
Jewish," but was not required
to learn much Halachah.
When she inquired about
Jewish law, the Conservative
rabbi told her, "A lot of that
is antiquated," she said.
Hufstutter resents such
charges as well as allegations
that the Orthodox, by suppor-
ting a change in the Law of
Return, are being divisive.
"It was the Reform and
Conservative who broke
away," she said. "We're not
the ones who changed. For
3,300 years this is what we
have said.
"And what about the fact
that Conservative rabbis do

'And I realized that
according to the
very Torah I
sought, I wasn't
Jewish:

not recognize Reform conver-
sions, and many Conservative
rabbis do not even recognize
each other's conversions?"
This, Huffstutter said,
underlines the need for one,
universally recognized stan-
dard for conversions.
She also scoffed at com-
plaints that the Orthodox are
politically motivated in their
actions to change the Law of
Return. Orthodox, she said,
are motivated by only one fac-
tor — Halachah. "As Or-
thodox Jews, we simply have
no choice but to observe
Jewish law."
Those who threatened to
withhold funds from Israel in-
spired Huffstutter to action,
but their money causes her
little concern.
"Money has never been the
salvation or the redemption of
the Jewish people," she said.
"If it's a choice between
money and Torah, I'll take
Torah any time."
