MC Asks Bush
To Combat Hatred
New York — The American
Jewish Committee has urged
President-Elect George Bush
to do "everything within your
power to combat hatred and
discrimination, and ensure
the 'liberty and justice for all'
to which America is
dedicated."
Ira Silverman, AJC ex-
ecutive vice president,
reminded Bush, in a letter
sent to him at the White
House, that 1989 will mark
the 25th anniversary of the
enactment of the Civil Rights
Act of 1964.
"Thanks to the Civil Rights
Act," he wrote, "much pro-
gress has been made in our
nation. However, there still
remains much to be done. For
example, extremist, white
supremacy hate movements,
continue to be active, and
racially motivated crimes are
on the rise. Discrimination,
regrettably, has not yet been
eradicated."
Silverman urged specific ac-
tions on the President-elect:
In filling the post of head of
the civil rights division of the
Justice Department, keep in
mind that "our nation needs
officials for whom civil rights
is a high priority, who will
vigorously enforce civil rights
laws, and who will seek addi-
tional legislation if that is
necessary."
"We hope that top Justice
Department officials will sup-
port the affirmative action
remedy of reasonable goals
and timetables in minority
employment and educational
opportunities to rectify the
consequences of generations
of discrimination."
The government play "an
active role in promoting good
intergroup relations," and the
Bush Administration "take
the necessary steps" to
strengthen the resources of
the Community Relations
Service of the Justice
Department.
Actively support the Hate
Crimes Statistics Act
(S.702/H.R.3193) which would
require the Justice Depart-
ment to collect, maintain, and
publish data annually on
crimes "motivated by pre-
judice based on race, religion,
ethnicity or sexual orienta-
tion." This bill, Mr. Silverman
explained, that was passed by
the House during the last
Congress, "is the logical ex-
tention" of a measure already
passed into law, the Hate
Crimes Act, P.0.100-346, im-
posing criminal penalties for
acts of violence "intended to
interfere with the free exer-
cise of religion."
