its pristine passion for the
past? Is nostalgia a theatrical
nostrum for the negatives of
society? "I don't call it
nostalgia," says Harelik. "I
say it's a longing to prevent a
loss of something valuable, to
prevent something from slip-
ping away."
Indeed,
says
the
playwright, his play succeeds
despite its positive picture of
his ancestral Jewish life.
"Jews get off watching plays
about Jewish failures," he
contends. "There is really
something perverse in that."

But when it comes to
Judaism, Harelik himself
feels very much the im-
migrant, arriving on the
steps of a religion he doesn't
quite adhere to. "I am an
ancestral Jew, an outsider,"
he says. "I don't embrace
many tenets of the faith. I feel
awkward being called on as a
Jewish spokesman, although
I feel I am part of a large com-
munity."
That community has flock-
ed to his play ever since The
Immigrant was first staged
some seasons back in Los
Angeles. Subsequent stag-
ings around the country also
have met with success.

siders, more sunlight coming
in," he says.
The sun has shown him the
way toward other aspects of
his life, says Harelik. "This is
also a play about parents and
children, about all com-
munities."
Indeed, The Immigrant was
meant as a passport to
everyone's past, he claims. "I
really wrote the play for non-
Jews," he says. "I always in-
tended this as a play about
America."
This land is my land, this
land is your land . . . Harelik
was hoping to land audiences
who could identify with the
unifying experience that is
the United States.
