People knew he was there yet couldn't find him. But Arlyn Meyerson is us- ed to obstacles . . . This was a very minor one . . . He's been deaf since birth . . . and although able to utter sounds, can converse better with pen- cil and paper handy. You might say to yourself that someone like this could never be successful in the restaurant business if he had to meet and greet people .•. . Arlyn has proven many to be wrongin this assumption .. . He has always been a fighter . . . with the credo that nothing is impossible. When Arlyn worked for his mother and father, Mary and Buddy Meyerson, at the original Buddy's Bar-B-Q on 12th Street and Clairmount, doing everything from A to Z . . . dishwashing to porter to cook to cashier to waiter to busboy to delivery boy to stock boy to washing win- dows, etc. . . . he gained ex- perience in overcoming shyness . . . Arlyn began en- joying meeting customers .. . and tells of improving in his approach to each customer . . . especially at the Meyer- son's Scotch 'n Sirloin on Greenfield and Northwestern, of which he was among the principal owners . . . learning from head waiter Marshall Weathers and manager Bud Sherbow. Arlyn is a tireless worker . . . It's nothing for him to put in a long day at Buddy's Bar- B-Q on Orchard Lake Road . . . His wife of 27 years, Hester, makes those wonder- ful chocolate chip cookies .. . plus pineapple cheescake from the recipe of Arlyn's mother, Mary . . . Hester and Arlyn are taking off now at 4 p.m. every Monday to enjoy eating experiences at various restaurants . . . They can relax with their employees, whose loyalty and devotion have never wavered. Arlyn's son, Howard, 37, graduated from Eastern Michigan University and for two years has been outdoor editor of the Grand Rapids Press . . . Kevin, 24, graduated from Arizona State University in May of this year and has been working in Thkyo, Japan, with a large company that specializes in magazines for students throughout the world. Robert, 23, graduated from University of Michigan in December 1987, and has been an aerospace engineer at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, 'Ibx. . . . plus working on various NASA projects throughout the United States . . . His first week, Robert was sent to Reno, Nev., to give a speech in front of 20,000 aerospace engineers working on the shuttle program. Both Kevin and Robert had previously been key workers at Buddy's Bar-B-Q in West Bloomfield since its opening five years ago. Their daughter, Lisa, 21, works in a Grand Rapids of- fice and plans to attend American Travel School. What started as a carry-out and 12-seater . . . is now a carry-out, delivery operation and 27-seater . . . with over 50 items among the chicken, ribs, shrimp and other entrees. Arlyn's parents sold the original Buddy's Bar-B-Q building to Shell Oil Co. in 1967, six months before the race riots broke out on 12th Street . . . They lived on Monte Vista in the Seven Mile Road and Meyers area before moving to Phoenix, Ariz. . . . Buddy passed on a number of years ago . . . and Mary is now 86 . . . Arlyn still uses the same bar-b-q sauce seasoning put on the ribs at Buddy's since back in 1932. "Everyody tells me that the older I get, the more I look like my father," Arlyn writes in his very clear handwriting. "This is a great compliment. Dad was handsome man" .. . He says that people, especial- ly those 50 to 70, tell him how much they miss Meyerson's Scotch 'n Sirloin . . . The "younger set," 35-45, talk about the Trio on North- western Highway. Meyerson's Scotch 'n Sirloin was sold by the family in December 1977 . . . and they closed the Trio on June 5, 1978. Arlyn admits that deaf per- sons have an aversion to mingling with people . . . but he says that he only sometimes feels that way .. . depending upon his mood .. . Having an inferiority com- plex, as many deaf persons are apt to have, is not one of Arlyn's traits . . . He has ex- treme confidence in himself, his abilities and tolerance .. . These are reasons why Arlyn has become successful. Buddy's Bar-B-Q is open seven days a week ... Monday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sundays and holidays 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Arlyn Meyerson is a proud individual . . . and his pride reflects in the kind of food prepared for customers at his carry-out, delivery and sit- down restaurant. Few people know food as much as Arlyn . . . and even fewer know the rudiments of a successful restaurant opera- tion . . . His hard work doesn't go unnoticed by customers who applaud the conscien- tiousness with which Arlyn prepares their food . . . Being deaf has proven to be an un- breakable barrier for many other persons . . . Arlyn, though, has shown that the only obstacle in being deaf is that you can't hear. Big deal . . . What does hearing have to do with cook- ing? . . . And it sure doesn't deprive him of those smiles . . . or common sense . . . or a winning personality. Inspiration is a key word in the life of Arlyn Meyerson .. . He gives it with ditto marks to others having the hearing impairment. Buddy Meyerson would be proud of his son Arlyn . . . For certain, Mary is. WORD HAS IT . . . that Dimitri "Jim" Syros will be coming back to this area again . . . The former owner of Dimitri's of Southfield is now a Florida restaurateur. DANISH CLUB of Detroit, now in its new 12,000-square- foot quarters on the mez- zanine level of American Center Building, Franklin Road, has been in its Grand River and Thlegraph locale since 1964 . . . Forerunner of today's Danish Club, the Danish Sportsmen's Club, was organized in 1927 and located on the corner of 12th and Hancock in Detroit .. . Membership is not restricted only to persons of Danish ancestry . . . anybody can belong. GOOD WAITRESS Dept. . . .
