USY Plans Special Chanukah
Candlelighting Ceremony
The department of youth
activities of the United Syna-
gogue of America will sponsor
a Chanukah torch-lighting
ceremony and slide show on
Monday at Congregation
B'nai Moshe at 7:30 p.m.
This event, which is open to
the entire community, will
celebrate Chanukah.
The chanukiah will be il-
luminated by a torch to be
brought from Modi'in, the ci-
ty in Israel in which the Mac-
cabean revolt originated.
Carrying the torch from
Israel will be three members
of Noar MaSorti, the United
Synagogue's Israel Youth
organization. Kinor Sheleff of
Ra'anana is in the 12th grade.
Kinor has been active in Noar
as a local group leader, a
counselor at the new Ramah-
Noar camp and recently as a
group leader at its annual
summer leadership training
course. Kinor is the national
chairperson of Noar. She is
presently a member of Noar's
seventh Nahal group and
looks forward to becoming
part of the MaSorti endeavor
at Kibbutz Hanaton.
Ronen Maital of Haifa is in
the 11th grade. He has been
a member of Noar for four
years. Ronen has been a
group leader in Haifa for
three years and is active help-
ing the local director in a ma-
jor outreach program being
undertaken in the area.
R'vka Kosin is beginning
the Nahal program at Kib-
butz Kfar Hachoresh. She is
from Haifa and has been ac-
tive member in Noar for
several years, as a local youth
leader and on the national
committee. She has twice
joined USYers on USY Israel
Pilgrimage for two weeks as
a Noar representative.
David Tessler, Central
Region United Synagogue
Youth's president, as well as
representatives from the six
local USY chapters will par-
ticipate in the ceremony with
the Noar members. Arlyne
Bochnek of Cleveland,
CRUSY regional director,
also will attend.

Holocaust Expert Will Speak
For HMC Lecture Series

Dr. Randolph L. Braham,
Distinguished Professor of
Political Science at the City
College of the City Universi-
ty of New York (CUNY), will
deliver the closing lecture in
the Holocaust Memorial
Center's fall series at 7:30
p.m. Tuesday in Shiffman
Hall of the Jewish Communi-
ty Center.
An authority on the Third
Reich and a leading expert on
the Holocaust in Hungary,
Prof. Braham will speak on
"Silence and Madness: The
Holocaust in Hungary:
The author or editor of 28
books, Braham has published
dozens of scholarly articles
and reviews as well as hun-
dreds of articles and notes in
various encyclopedias. Some
of his works were used as ma-
jor resources by courts in
various countries, including
Israel and West Germany, in
cases involving restitution
and war crimes.
He has written a number of
Women Reach Fund Goal
To Help The Retarded
With a check for $17,000 to
the Federated Endowment
Fund, Northwest Child
Rescue Women has achieved
its $100,000 endowment goal
to benefit developmentally
disabled persons.
The money was raised over
the course of four years
through a number of ac-
tivities including holiday gift
wrapping at Macomb Mall,
an annual bazaar, raffles,
rummage sales and tribute
cards.
The Northwest Child
Rescue Women endowment
fund provides for Jewish
Community Center programs
for retarded individuals in-
cluding social and recrea-
tional programs and a week-
long camping experience.
For more than 40 years,
Northwest Child Rescue
Women has been working to
aid needy children.
In addition to sending
money to Israel, Northwest
Child Rescue Women also
raises money to assist abused
mothers and children at the
Haven, in Pontiac.
The Federated Endowment
Fund of the United Jewish
Charities was established in
1984 to develop new and per-
manent funds for the Jewish
community. The fund also
sponsors educational pro-
grams on charitable giving
and financial planning.
Agency Awards On Wednesday
The second annual Agency
Leadership Awards sponsored
by the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion and its member agencies
will take place 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday at Knollwood
Country Club.
The evening is a tribute to
JWF agency board members
"whose commitment and
leadership have enabled their
agency to render the highest
quality of service to the com-
munity." A dessert reception
will follow the program.

Dr. Randolph Braham

volume The Politics of
Genocide, The Holocaust in
Hungary was selected for the
National Jewish Book Award,
and earned him citations in
the New York State Assembly
and in the Congresional
Record. He is currently
working on a study titled
"Against Memory and
Homeland: The Multifaceted
Onslaught Against the
Holocaust and Israel?'
Prof. Braham is the Direc-
tor of the Emeric and Ilana
Csengeri Institute for
Holocaust Studies at the
Graduate School and Univer-
sity Center of CUNY.
