By nullifying her mother's
first marriage — the mar-
riage of which she was an off-
spring — Lederman, in effect,
became a bastard to Or-
thodox. She realized that this
legalistic maneuvering had
been done by the "same
religious minority determin-
ed to redefine 'Who Is A
Jew. . .' By declaring me a
bastard ex post facto, they had
made it possible for Ariel to
get married within the
religious fold. And suddenly,
I was a second-class citizen,
born of an invalid marriage,
scarcely a Jew at all. The
question [of 'Who Is A Jew']
hit home."

'Nation' Says
Jews, Press
Blocked Justice
For PLO

In recent issues, the Nation
magazine — no stranger to
unpopular causes — has
claimed that American media
and American Jewish leader-
ship have prevented a bal-
anced, thoughtful reaction to
purported changes in Pales-
tinian thinking.
In the Dec. 5 Nation, colum-
nist Alexander Cockburn
claimed that "day by day, the
press shows evidence of
willful or reflexive ignorance
and racism in its coverage of
Israel and the Palestinians."
Cockburn, who was fired
from the Village Voice a few
years ago for going on a
junket funded by Arab states,
asserted that the press' reac-
tion to "this momentous de-
velopment [of the intifada and
the declaration of a Palestin-
ian state] has been predic-
table."

"Best representative" of the
media's stance, he said, was a
Nov. 16 New York Times'
editorial. This said, according
to Cockburn, "that there was
no fundamental change in
Palestinian attitude that
should be addressed by either
Israel or the United States.
Against one should should
remember that for years both
governments have challenged
the PLO to accept [U.N.]
Resolutions 242 and 338; now
that it has done so, the rules
have promptly changed."
If the new Bush administra-
tion "is to make any effort to
push the Israelis to the
bargaining table," continued
Cockburn, "the role of the
press in forming public opin-
ion will be of enormous im-
portance. This year, virtually
no one in the press challenged
candidates toward a position
