Linda Goldstein capped an
outstanding freshman season
by winning the 500-meter
freestyle at the state Class A
swim meet last Saturday.
Goldstein, from West
Bloomfield High School, took
the 500 in 5:02.08. She was
second in the 200 freestyle
(1:52.13) and swam on the
Lakers' fifth-place freestyle
relay team.
West Bloomfield coach Bob
Crosby said it is "somewhat
unusual" for a freshman to
win an event at the state
meet.
Goldstein earned All-Metro
Suburban Activities Associa-
tion honors this year, winning
the 200 IM and 100
backstroke at the league
meet. She was selected to the
All-Area team, which is
chosen by area coaches, and
earned All-State honors with
her victory on Saturday.
Goldstein set West Bloom-
field records with her in-
dividual times Saturday. She
set the school's 200 IM record
(2:13.45) earlier in the season.
Her times on Saturday
qualified her for the U.S.
Swimming Junior National
meet in Florida next spring,
as did her time in a 1,000
freestyle, U.S. Swimming
event on Sunday.
Crosby called Goldstein's
season "outstanding. As far
as individual races she was
undefeated . . . I think it's just
a beginning. She's still got a
long way to go. Her work
ethic and her dedication will
take her very far in swimm-
ing?'
Birmingham Groves was
the Class A team winner at
the meet.
