But Golding feels that on
an individual team, women
coaches have little edge over
men. "The only advantage I
can see is the locker room
supervision. I was able to
relate very well with my girls.
I had to become more attun-
ed to their emotional needs
and especially to the
menstrual cycle. That affected
their emotions and it did af-
fect their play . . .
"Other than that I treated
the girls just like I did the
boys and I made the same
demands on them as I did on
the boys.
"I don't think there's any
advantage to a woman
coaching women. I think that
women can coach men. I
think it has to do with the
personality and I think it has
to do with the skill level and
knowledge that the coach
has."
Greenberg played for a man
when she was an All-Stater at
Livonia Ladywood. She
played for a woman coach at
Michigan State. Although she
praised MSU coach Karen
Langland, Greenberg says
that she preferred to play for
her male high school coach.
"Ed Cavanaugh, when he
coached, was one of the best
coaches Michigan ever had
... He just knew the game so
well and he was committed to
female athletics."
Although a further decline
in the percentage of women
coaching girls' sports teams
should be resisted, the solid
growth of girls' athletics

shows that the men, who
coach 71 percent of the girls'
varsity teams, are doing a
good job. What girls' athletics
needs is the involvement of
more former players such as
Mills, a multi-sports star at
Highland Park High School,
and Greenberg, whose inex-
perienced Lakers finished a
surprising 14-8 this season.
"I've watched Ronna
Greenberg in a game situa-
tion," says Golding, "and I've
watched her run practice. She
definitely knows what she's
doing. I was impressed with
her."
As Greenberg notes, "The
bottom line is, a good coach is
a good coach. And a good
coach is going to know what
to do, whether it's a male or
a female." E
