Tel Aviv (JTA) — High-
ranking reserve officers in the
Israel Defense Force and dis-
abled war veterans addressed
a mass rally here recently
protesting the exemption of
yeshiva students from com-
pulsory military service.
The rally drew between
25,000 and 30,000 Israelis, ac-
cording to Mayor Shlomo
Lahat of 1h1 Aviv, an IDF
reserve general who was one
of the organizers. Other
sources estimated the crowd
at 19,000 to 20,000, approx-
imately the number of
yeshiva students currently
exempted from the draft.
Exemptions for yeshiva
students has been a divisive
issue in Israel since the state
was founded in 1948. Special
arrangements were worked
out betWeen then Prime Min-
ister David Ben-Gurion and
the religious parties to excuse
400 yeshiva students from
military duty.
The issue came to a head
after the ultra-Orthodox par-
ties made impressive gains in
the Knesset elections. Conti-
nuing the military exemp-
tions was one 6f the pledges
Prime Minister Yitzhak
Shamir made to win the
religious parties' participa-
tion in a Likud-led coalition
government.
Peace Now Plans
Talks With PLO
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Peace Now
made plans at a meeting in
Jerusalem last week to
launch a "Talk Peace With
the PLO Now" campaign, ac-
cording to the Jerusalem Post.
Yuli Tamir, a founder of
Peace Now and the moderator
at its meeting, said tentative
plans have been made for
Peace Now members to meet
with representatives of the
Palestine National Council
late in January.
Tamir did not disclose
where the meeting will be
held. Subsequent meetings
would probably take place in
Europe and America.
Tamir said Peace Now
decided 10 days ago to call for
direct talks with the PLO
regardless of the Israeli law
prohibiting direct contact
with the PLO.
Peace Now and similar
groups in Israel and abroad
believe the PNC took a major
step toward recognizing Israel
and renouncing terrorism at
its meeting in Algiers last
month.
