Path Cleared
For Emigration

The family of Detroiter
Svetlana Braun was among
the 40 Soviet Jewish families
that received notice last week
that secrecy provisions will no
longer prevent their emigra-
tion from the Soviet Union.
Keith Braun telephoned his
father-in-law Monday. The
family expects to receive per-
mission to emigrate to Israel
within one or two months.
Their departure would take
place several months later.
The family includes
Svetlana's parents, Ilya and
Izabella Shteingardt, and
16-year-old sister, Zhanna. Il-
ya's brother was due to arrive
in Israel this week, Braun
said.

Israel reacted coolly this
week to President-elect
George Bush's choice of
Thomas Pickering, am-
bassador to Israel since 1985,
as U.S. representative to the
United Nations.
Pickering has been
outspoken in his condemna-
tion of Israel's treatment of
Palestinian workers as viola-
tions of human rights.
Sources say Pickering also
has been frustrated by Israel
Prime Minister Yitzhak
Shamir's refusal to consider
Secretary of State George
Shultz's peace initiative. The
Shultz plan recommends an
international conference on
the Middle East.
Before working in Israel,
Pickering served as am-
bassador to El Salvador and
in the 1970s, as ambassador
to Jordan. King Hussein
labeled Pickering "the best
American ambassador I've
ever dealt with!'

Parents Want
Christmas Songs

The Bloomfield Hills board
of education is considering a
request to permit students to
sing Christmas songs and
place Christmas trees in the
classroom, and increase the
number of Christmas pro-
grams in the schools.
The request was filed by a
group of parents who said
that celebrating holidays in
the classroom will allow
students to learn about other
religions.
They also said Christmas
and Chanukah celebrations
will help students learn
values.
