Hedonism whispers
"choose pleasure." Judaism
calls on us to "choose life."
The two are not synonymous.
We must not deprive our-
selves or our children from
the right to struggle, the
capacity to suffer, the
courage to endure pain, the
mandate to afflict our souls.
lb be Jewish is to be prepared
to struggle, to combat those
who step on the throats of the
innocent, to free the prisoners
of Zion behind the Iron Cur-
tain, to love and care for each
other. To be Jewish is to bear
with dignity the scars and
blemishes that give meaning
to our lives.
Hedonism has nothing to
live for, only a life to avoid. In
heroin, heroism is denied.
It is not enough to tell our
children to "just say no."
They will not say "no" to
drugs and not go back on
their word until they learn to
say "yes" to life. And to say
"yes" to life is to say "yes" to
pain and struggle and sacri-
fice without which no ideal
can be touched. God is called
"the life of the universe."
Alive He does not sit above
the clouds in Holy indif-
ference. Alive God too feels
and suffers and is afflicted in
our afflictions. "For a long
time I have kept silence, I
have kept still and restrained
Myself; now I will cry out like
a woman in travail, I will gasp
and pain" (Isaiah 42:14). As
God lives, we are alive. As
God lives and struggles, so
must we who would live. ❑

...Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, recalls
the victory-more than 2100 years ago-of a militarily
weak but spiritually strong Jewish people over the mighty
forces of a ruthless enemy that had overrun the Holy
Land and threatened to engulf the land and its people
in darkness.
The invaders, a sophisticated and cultured
people, were not averse to the moral and ethical values
of the Jewish religion. They sought solely to eradicate the
Divinity of Torah and the immutability of its command-
ments as the basis for this morality.
The miraculous victory-culminating with
the rededication of the Sanctuary in Jerusalem and the
rekindling of the Menorah candelabra which had been
desecrated and extinguished by the enemy-has been
celebrated annually during these eight days of Chanu-
kah. The lighting of the Menorah is a message and sym-
bol of the triumph of freedom over oppression, of spirit
over matter, of light over darkness.
It is a timely and reassuring message, for the
forces of darkness are ever present. Moreover, the danger
does not come exclusively from outside; it often lurks
close to home, in the form of insidious erosion of time-
' ciples that are the foundation
honored values and pm
of any decent human society. Needless to say, darkness
is not chased away by brooms and sticks, but by illu-
mination. Our Sages said, 'A little light dispels much
darkness?
The Chanukah Lights remind us in a most
obvious way that illumination begins at home, within
oneself and one's family, by increasing and intensifying
the observance of Torah and Mitzvot in the everyday
experience. But though it begins at home, it does not
stop there. Such is the nature of light that when one
kindles a light for one's own benefit, it benefits also all
who are in the vicinity. Indeed, the Chanukah Lights are
expressly meant to illuminate the 'outside, symbolically
alluding to the duty to bring light also to those who, for
one reason or another, still walk in darkness . . ./,
