visas are doing so solely out
of economic consideration.
Put bluntly, they think they
will fare better financially in
the "Golden Medina" than
they would in the "Jewish
Medina."
What moral grounds do we
have to press our government
to give Soviet Jews priority
over the hundreds of
thousands of desperate
refugees who have no viable
alternative (eg. Vietnamese
boat people) except entry in-
to the States? Can we really
claim that it is more impor-
tant for our government to
provide Soviet Jews an alter-
native to Israeli citizenship
than for it to let in more boat
people?

Making Aliyah
Is The Answer

At this time we have an
uproar in the community and
Israel regarding the basic
principal of "Who is A Jew"
and I am afraid that this is
dividing our people. We can-
not afford this division when
we have problems with out-
side enemies .. .
We are a unique communi-
ty. Our roots encompass all
the beautiful heritage from
2,000 years of wandering
through darkness and light,
from Babylon, Greece, Egypt,
Rome, Spain, Germany,
Poland, Russia and many
other countries . . . We do not
have to give up our religious
freedom or our heritage in
order to have a profession in-
medicine, science, law or
engineering, or to work for
the government, or serve in
the armed forces. We are the
largest Jewish community in
numbers, in wealth, in
freedom, in general
knowledge and accomplish-
ment that ever existed.
We have the flowers in our
garden. The only thing we
have to do is cultivate them.
Our generation has seen
the greatest calamity in
history to befall the Jewish
people. Over six million of the
purest and finest were
murdered . . . Also, we have
seen in our generation the
establishment of the third
commonwealth of the Jewish
State. For 2,000 years,
generation after generation
have been waiting for this
moment.

For this we have the respon-
sibility to give our children
the choice that no other
generation ever had, to
become a part of Eretz Israel.
If we can have a steady
stream of our young people
make aliyah to Israel, pro-
blems would ease.
We have to give every
Jewish child an education
concerning Israel, both the
people and the land. Our
Jewish community has the
obligation to do that. We are
the survivors. We have the
benefits . . . we must also
have the obligation .. .

Dual Loyalty,
Who Is A Jew

The threats of "non-
support" of the State of Israel
remind me of the reactions of
certain Jewish leaders during
the Pollard Affair. There were
voices that called upon
American Jews to make a
clear choice between "their"
country and the Jewish state;
Washington or Jerusalem.
American Jews were
challenged to show where
their loyalties lay.
Now that Jews in Israel
have decided how their
Jewish community would be
organized, American Jewish
leadership rose up in arms.
Jews in Israel are expected to
show dual loyalty — a com-
mitment to the concerns of
American Jewry about the
high rates of assimilation and
intermarriage, as well as
their own needs for a stable
government. If Israeli Jewish
leadership does not pay atten-
tion to the needs of American
Jews, they are turning their
backs on the largest single
Jewish community in the
world.
Where is the tolerance so
typical of American Jewry,
towards differing streams of
Judaism? It seems as if
American Jewish leaders are
unusually nervous as the sad
results of long years of apathy
over the high rates of inter-
marriage enfold before them,
and they expect Jews in Israel
to accept the situation
blindly.
