FRIDAY, DECEMBER 2, 1988

estaurants galore .. .
about 25 of them .. .
lined the Fisher
Theater lobby . . . as almost
800 folks came to the gala by
Kaplan Medical Center and
Michigan Opera Theatre in
research for an AIDS cure.
The Lebanese food of
Sultan's was like a mecca for
the milling people who came
back for more taboulee,
hoummus, etc. as owner
Walid Eid looked on with
pride . . . The E.G. Nick's
chicken was a standout .. .
plus Excalibur's coconut
chicken, Ginopolis' goodies,
Kingsley Inn together with
certified master chef Michael
Russell, Savino Sorbet, Carl
"Pizza Gourmet" Oschinsky
(he and Mike Ilitch will open
a 90-seater at Crosswinds
Mall), Stage & Co., 1940's
Chop House, Rattlesnake
Club, . Bloomfield Charley's,
Home Sweet Home, La
Rotisserie, Midtown Cafe,
Panache, Pegasus, etc.
Barrister Billy Liberson
borrowing violin to play a few
strains . . . Lou Golden,
honorary chairman, remem-
bering his claim to fame: a
4-year-old in Yugoslavia win-
ning marble-shooting contest
as the only Jewish contestant
. . . Bob Benson, co-chairman
with Steve Bock, touching
bellies of pregnant women .. .
Loving Cup Danny Jordan
playing piano while "night
off' wife Marlene Hill listen-
ed and watched . . . Barbara
Cohen excited at the large
crowd . . . Harley Marks,
Leah's son, getting sick night
before and having appendec-
tomy day of show . . . Leah ar-
riving from hospital in
elegant dress she can finally
get into after losing 20
pounds.
Jeffrey Bruce did a fine job
as emcee . . . and the show on
Fisher Theater stage was a
standout with backdrop and
setting from The Pirates of
Penzance . . . in front of which
four performers from the
show sang in street clothes
because union oddly didn't
permit them to wear
costumes.
When curtain went up, peo-
ple who sat patiently weren't
disappointed as they awaited
an expected fashion ex-
travaganza . . . The truly pro-
fessional Leah Marks produc-
tion had models coming from
everywhere on stage . . . amid
the harbored skull and
crossbones ship, treasure

chests and rocks on The
Pirates of Penzance island
setting.
Models in leotards wearing
upper's jewelry . . . wind and
snow as models were elegant
on balconies and stage wear-
ing exquisite, stylish and very
modern Bricker-Tunis Furs
. . . larger women clothes
from Valentina . . . Sports at-
tire for men from Kosins .. .
Lavender and black garments
from Ray and Ida's, more
larger gals, men's coats, pant
suits for gals, furs etc. . . . plus
big oohs and aahs as one of
the models flared his black
coat to show its bright red lin-
ing . . . Slim gals among the
large wedding scene with
loads of smoke rising from
stage . . . and so much more
in the well-paced 40 minutes.
Thirty-two models and crew
of 85 made this lavish presen-
tation a first on any promi-
nent local stage . . . The ex-
cellent setting, modeling pro-
fessionalism, superb lighting
and high choreography made
for a magnificent offering.
Although show was entitled
"Broadway Night at the
Fisher," music chosen was
anything but Broadway .. .
and some of the models in
front of the huge audience
seemed to be star-stricken
with being on a great stage
for perhaps the first time .. .
But give them their moment
in the sun if. . it was a
wonderful one to remember.
MICHIGAN CANCER
Foundation has become
highly acclaimed for its very
successful social functions .. .
However, lost in the shuffle is
the great work done by this
very fine organization in the
continual battle to combat
cancer . . . either in finding a
cure or putting a stoppage to
the disease's advances within
a person's body.
About 220 raised a whopp-
ing quarter of a million
dollars recently as MCF's
Angels, founded by Helen and
the late Paul Zuckerman
three years ago, held its first
affair at the new Skyline
Club on 26th floor of 2000
'Dawn Center, Southfield.
Getting off the elevator, it
was like walking into a cloud-
like atmosphere with the ceil-
ing draped to simulate where
angels fly . . . Hal Youngblood
did his WJR nighttime show
from the event . . . as black
ties and elegant gowns were
among the enthusiastic and
devoted attendees . . . Last
year, MCF Angels affair rais-
ed $175,000.
Naturally David Hermelin

emcee, Helen Zuckerman
lovely as always, Judge Alice
Gilbert and Hubby Dr. Herb
Bloom, Marcia and Gene Ap-
plebaum, Norman Allan,
Shirlee and Jack Iden, Stu
Goreleck, Norbie Zuckerman,
Susie and Bob Sosnick, Sydell
and Doug Schubot, Helen
Rosenbloom, Sharon and Dr.
Dick Brown, Sis Maizel, Mar-
ty Kellman, Ann Eisenberg.
A noise as Dave spoke and
his quick wit exclaimed,
"Don't shoot, I'll marry you!,"
Lil and Gil Silverman, Mar-
ty Weisman with black eye
from car accident . . . Wife
Linda too sore to attend .. .
Dave table-hopping and
answering questions about
media static regarding Palace
at Auburn Hills.
The MCF Angels soared
high above the city of
Southfield . . . and the tune of
a quarter-million dollars was
music to the ears of its resear-
chers whose advances have
been amazingly rapid.
SO MUCH good food . . . as
about 25 people enjoyed
Thanksgiving dinner at home
of Irene and Nate Light .. .
plus a half-dozen more for
dessert . . . The luscious
dishes made a big hit with
everyone except little Emily
Weiss, daughter of Dr. Mark
and Sandy Weiss . . . While
folks smacked their lips to
Terri Cassels-Kalinowski's
yummie delights . . . Emily
had her own palate pleaser
. . . a good ol' peanut butter
sandwich made by Sandy.
Among the desserts were
low-cal, no cholesterol pum-
pkin pie and apple streudel by
Marilyn Nelson . . . Here are
the recipes . . . Pumpkin Pie:
4 egg whites, 1/2 cup honey,
1-15 oz. can pumpkin, 1 tsp
cinnamon, 1 tsp. cloves, 1 tsp.
nutmeg, 1-12 oz. can skimm-
ed evap. milk ... Crust: 1 cup
whole wheat flour, 1/2 to 2 cups
diet margarine, 3-4 tbsp. ap-
ple juice concentrate . . . Mix
in food processor until ball
forms . . . Roll out and line in
10 inch pie plate sprayed with
Pam . . . Mix pie ingredients
tog-Aher and pour into crust
. . . bake at 350 degrees for 50
to 60 minutes.
For the struedel, Marilyn
takes 1 /2 package of whole
wheat filo dough, raising and
nuts, 3 lb. pkg. Rome or
Jonathan apples sliced in food
processor . . . Mix sliced ap-
ples, raisins, nuts and V4 cup
apple juice concentrate in
large bowl . Unroll filo
dough carefully, spread apple
mixture and roll up like a
