ENTERTAINMENT I Birmingham yin pot THE•THEATRE in cooperation with TheDetroitNews r- David Schneuer's original prints on paper have, of late, been appearing in the collec- tions of many Detroiters. His serigraphs also have been featured in shows at the Jewish Community Center and at Gallery 22 in Bloom- field Hills. But, the art world lost the talent of Schneuer when he died in Israel on Nov. 7. He was 83. Mr. Schneuer was born and educated in Germany. He studied at the Munich Kunstgewerbeschule, then did magazine illustrations and worked as a stage designer for the Munchener Schauspielhaus. The linoleum cut posters which he created at the beginning of the 1920s were an innovation in their use of this medium and received much acclaim. His short stay in Paris influenced him great- ly and left a lasting impres- sion on his painting. Schneuer was imprisoned at Dachau. After liberation, he emigrated to pre-state Israel, where he widely influenced the graphic design of the newly developing state. He produced large murals for public places and ships. In 1985, the Israel Museum held a one-man show of his work and since that time it has- been widely shown in Europe, Japan and the United States. Schneuer's work explores the fun and mischief of the bistros, cafes and "fancy" houses of the late 19th/early 20th-Century Paris. While Schneuer's work was virtually unknown in the U.S. most of his life, during the past three years it gained an audience in the Birmingham- Bloomfield-West Bloomfield- Southfield area.
