turn the Danish people
against their Jewish
neighbors. They were
singularly unsuccessful. In
1943, the Nazis decreed that
every Jew had to wear a
yellow Star of David. When
King Christian X heard this,
he immediately went on the
radio to speak to his country.

Danish nation. We have no
`Jewish problem' in our coun-
try because we never had an
inferiority complex in rela-
tion to the Jews. If the Jews
are forced to wear the yellow
star, I and my whole family
shall wear it as a badge of
honor."
Needless to say, the badge
was never introduced in Den-
mark. In fact, when the Ger-
mans did press for deporta-
tion of Jews, the Danes
retaliated by scuttling the
Danish fleet. Many Danish
soldiers lost their lives
shielding their Jewish
friends.
This is the spirit of
Chanukah — that men and
women will voluntarily ex-
pose their lives for what they
believe. It is the inspiring
story of self-sacrifice that lies
at the heart of every great
humanitarian achievement.
Scholars offer many reasons
for the eight-day celebration,
but the story of the miracle
rings true for it symbolizes
the miracle of Jewish survival
through the ages.
On Purim and Tisha B'Av
as well as on Chanukah, it is
important to remember the
miracle of Jewish survival.
We survived it all — the In-
quisition, the Crusades, the
Holocaust. According to the
laws of logic, history,
geography and sociology, we
should not be here. But we
are! We are the real miracles,
and each Jew is a candle
whose light proclaims that
Judaism is alive and well.
Three Soviet citizens — a
Pole, a Czech, and a Jew —
were sentenced to death.
Each was granted a last wish.
"I want my ashes scattered
over the grave of Pilsudski,"
said the Pole.
"I want my ashes scattered
voer the grave of Magaryk,"
said the Czech.
"I," said the Jew, "want my
ahses scattered over the grave
of Comrade Chairman."
"But that's impossible," he
was told. "The comrade
Chairman isn't dead yet."
"Fine," said the Jew. "I can
wait,"
We Jews continue to wait.
Jews always out wait and out-
wit their adversaries. That is
the real miracle of Chanukah.
