PATIENT APPRECIATION DAY

Schechter schools do admit
non-Jewish children to pre-
school facilities, and that
when kindergarten time ap-
proaches, the policy preven-
ting non-Jewish children
from entering Jewish studies
becomes binding.
Sandy Kramer, director of
the pre-school program at
Reform Temple Beth Am's
day school, told Stein she had
no problem accepting non-
Jewish children, provided
parents understood that the
Jewish holidays are
celebrated by all students
through prayer, song,
ceremonies and worship
services.
She told Stein she knows
why some non-Jewish parents
come to Beth Am. "They have
heard that our school is a
wonderful pre-school and they
want (their children) to have
the experiences our pre-school
offers — and those parents, for
the most part, are not
religiously oriented."
At the Reform school's
grade level, Lenore kippur,
the Judaic Studies director,
said the few non-Jewish
students enrolled at that level
are mainly from mixed-
marriage homes.
Her belief is that "the
Jewish parent is obviously
concerned that their child be
here," she told Stein.
"Therefore we think we are
helping to educate the child
Jewishly and to know that
heritage."
The more Orthodox the
school, the more intensive is
the examination into the
religious backgrounds of
black parents who want to
enroll their children in a
Jewish day school.
Rabbi Joshua Fishman of
the Orthodox Torah
Umesorah, said affiliated
schools do admit black Jewish
children, but he stressed that
Torah Umesorah officials are
aware there is much fraud in
claims of black to be authen-
tically — which to Torah
Umesorah officials means
halachically — Jewish.
Fishman said that, over the
years, admission officials
have learned how to sense
dubious claims which they
promptly and thoroughly
check out.
He said he had no figures
on how many such black
Jewish children attend Torah
Umesorah schools but said
"there have been some."
He said the backgrounds of
such families are checked
routinely, and some more
closely if there is any reason
to doubt the applicant fami-
ly's claim to be halachically
Jewish. "That can apply to
white families, too," he added.
