For Mrs. Fox, the Family Living Room gives her "a firmer understanding of my Jewishness and how it relates to families." Daughter Lori looks at the program as a chance to meet other Jewish teens as well as learn about Jewish identity "and how it relates to the real world." Mrs. Brookenthal of Bloom- field Thwnship and daughter Heidi said they would con- tinue the evening's discussion in the car on the way home. Heidi saw the evening as an opportunity to hear how other Jews feel. "It strengthens our commitment to a firmer understanding of our Jewish beliefs," her mother added. To Rabbi Aft, these responses show that the pro- gram is achieving what it set out to do: to give parents and teens an opportunity to learn about what Judaism says about ethical and moral issues; to give the teens a forum in which they can com- municate with their parents in a non-combative at- mosphere and to help the par- ticipants internalize Jewish values. Rabbi Cohn said he hopes that the parents and teens will use what they've gained from the sessions and try to learn more. "My main goal is that they should come away wanting more," Rabbi Cohn said. "We want them to say 'yes my Judaism has something to of- fer and I want to look for it: " Mrs. Appelman said the ses- sions are providing families with topics they may not have ever pursued. "We've opened the door for constructive discussion. We want them to explore some new things that Judaism has to offer." The Family Living Room was kicked off last August at Congregation Beth Shalom, where the topic of discussion was relating to the elderly. A program was held at Thmple Emanu-El in September. lb date, other congregations which have already par- ticipated or have a program on tap include Thmple Beth El, Adat Shalom. Synagogue, Thmple Shir Shalom, Thmple Kol Ami and Thmple Shir Tikvah (formerly Troy Jewish Congregation). Based on the Life and Values Experience Program for teens developed by New York educator Rabbi Norman Amsel for NCSY, the Family Living Room project brings together parents and teens to enhance communication bet- ween them as well as to point out how Jewish values affect daily life. Jewish textual material also is introduced in the sessions. Each of the constituent organizations has something special to offer to the Family Living Room. NCSY picks out the TV programs, reviews and edits them and creates a cur- riculum. It has already seen success in Cleveland, Dayton and Cincinnati, Ohio. The UHS has the responsibility for recruitment and marketing. Not only is the program offered for two hours every Sunday in its Com- munity Jewish High School, but outreach is made to the various synagogues and temples as well. In addition, the UHS provides the fun- ding. Since the J.E.F.F. pro- gram's focus lies in family education, it is contributing its expertise, materiali and staff. lb date, nearly 300 parents and teens have participated. In light of the current "Who is a Jew?" controversy, the sponsoring groups point strongly to the fact that the program is conducted by a Reconstructionist rabbi (Aft), an Orthodox rabbi whose ex- pertise is working with teens (Cohn) and a Jewish family life educator whose programs span the spectrum of Jewish .
