Palestine National Council in
Algiers, and described P.L.O.
statements supposedly
recognizing Israel and re-
nouncing terrorism as entire-
ly insufficient.
Quayle also said he regard-
ed any comparisons of the
Palestinian intifada, or upris-
ing, in the West Bank and
Gaza Strip with the civil
rights struggle in the United
States or the anti-apartheid
movement in South Africa as
"entirely inappropriate," ac-
cording to Abram.
According to Abram,
Quayle told the delegation
that he was fully committed
to the U.S.-Israeli strategic
alliance; that he strongly sup-
ported U.S. efforts to win
reversal of the UN resolution
equating Zionism with
racism; and that he hoped to
emulate Vice President
Bush's role in American ef-
forts to rescue Ethiopian
Jews.

Israel, USSR
Teams Compete

Tel Aviv (JTA) - The cham-
pion Hapoel volleyball team
from Kiryat Ata will soon go
to Moscow to play the
Muscovite "Dynamos" in the
European Cup contest, mak-
ing Hapoel the first Israeli
sports team to compete
against a Soviet team in the
USSR in more than 20 years.
After the game in Moscow,
the Russian players will come
to Israel for a return match,
it was reported last week.
Since the Soviets broke
diplomatic relations with
Israel in 1967, their sport-
smen have met in competi-
tion, but always in neutral
countries.
The good news was a disap-
pointment for Maccabee Tel
Aviv, Israel's championship
basketball team. They had ex-
pected to be the first Israelis
to play in the USSR.
A match with the CSKA of
the Red Army sports club has
also been approved by the
senior Soviet official in
charge of overseas tour-
naments, Alexander Portnoy.
The hoopsters will meet in
Moscow on January 12, with
a rematch in Israel March 9.
