GORNBEINO

JEWELERS

image of Israeli Goliaths
against Palestinian Davids.
It will not inspire Diaspora
Jewry and rally Israel's most
loyal allies to its side.
— It will not win the political
admiration or economic sup-
port of the incoming Amer-
ican administration.
It will not bolster Israel's
moderate Arab neighbors and
transform its enemies' swords
into ploughshares.
Nor will it cool the rising
tide of international impa-
tience with an Israel that has
rejected the Shultz initiative,
rejected the PLO's peace
challenge and — now appears
further removed than ever
from producing a credible
peace plan of its own.
The single most awful truth
in this sad litany is that
Israel's leaders — secular and
religious, left and right — are,
to a very large degree, the
authors of their own desper-
ate predicament.
For the awesome problems
that now beset the Jewish
state are products of unerring
insensitivity, poor judgment
and lack of vision.
The dilemma is compound-
ed by the fact that there is lit-
tle to hope for: no sign of a
cool, competent, rational
head rising above the raucous
throng; no hint of Wisdom
lapping on the shores of Tel
Aviv or scaling the ancient,
golden walls of Jerusalem.
The future holds out the
promise of more of the same:
an escalation of violence and
r ) hatred within Israel's
borders, a growing military
threat from without, and —
like a constant, numbing
drumbeat — the intensifica-
tion of Israel's diplomatic
isolation in international
forums.
The worst may yet be to
come. When the Palestinian
issue is debated at the United
Nations later this month with
Arafat basking in the full
glare of media attention, a
further 25 states are expected
to add their names to the list
of 30 which have already ex-
tended formal recognition.
Now Israel is bracing for a
"stab in the back" from its
important trading partners in
the European Community,
some of which are anxious to
join the stampede.
One hint of things to come
was provided by British
Prime Minister Margaret
Thatcher when she visited
Washington late last month
to bid farewell to President
Reagan and congratulate
President-elect Bush on his
election victory.

Absolutely
unforgettable.
Incredibly
affordable.
