Woods' Display
Loses Colors

Huntington Woods has
changed its plans to decorate
four trees, including an
evergeen, in a small park on
Lincoln near Woodward for
the holidays.
The city commission, after
hearing complaints from
some residents, asked that
the trees be decorated with
clear lights instead of colored
lights. A similar display was
created in Huntington Woods'
Central Plaza on Scotia.
Some residents, led by Lin-
da Schwartz, complained that
decorating trees — especially
an evergreen — with colored
lights gives a religious con-
notation to the displays.
The city attorney has given
an opinion that Supreme
Court rulings allow such
displays. But the commission,
City Manager Mark
Wollenweber said, did not
want to offend any segments
of the community.

Reagan Names
Samuel Broder

Former Detroiter Dr.
Samuel Broder has been
chosen by President Reagan
to head the National Cancer
Institute. Dr. Broder is best
known for using the drug
AZT in the fight against
AIDS. The drug was
discovered 20 years earlier by
fellow Detroiter Dr. Jerome
Horwitz of the Michigan
Cancer Foundation.
Broder grew up in Oak Park
and is a graduate of the
University of Michigan. He
heads the National Cancer
Institute's clinical oncology
program.
His parents, Maier and
Mary Broder, live in
Southfield.

have agreed to share respon-
sibility for the safety of
Yeshivath Beth Yehudah
students crossing Greenfield
Road at Lincoln.

The cities will each provide
a crossing guard to help the
students cross Greenfield's
seven lanes of traffic.
Placement of crossing
guards at the busy intersec-
tion, adjacent to 1-696 freeway
construction, was delayed
because of the jurisdictional
dispute between Oak Park
and Southfield.
