▪ completely understand. "It's almost a new norm," says psychologist Gordon. "We have to redefine what we mean by family. Mom, Dad and 2.3 kids. It's obvious that's not what the American family is. Jenny may be angry some day she was adopted by a single mother. But when I am with her, that's all there is. It may well be that she's getting more attention than she might in a two parent home." There is no doubt that hav- ing a husband involved in the child rearing would make it easier financially and emo- tionally. No one is ruling out the possibility of marriage in the future. But none of the women regret the decision to adopt. In fact, they strongly suggest it, as long as the technical pitfalls and the long wait are considered. "It would be easier with a partner, or with the right partner," says Hughes. "When the baby takes her first steps, I'd like to have so- meone to share it with. When she's running a fever, it's nice to have someone to sit up at night and see if she's still breathing. It's nice, however, to make all of the choices. I don't regret having done it (adoption) single. If I didn't, I wouldn't have her." Expose Yourself to 30 days of the JCC Health Club Only $46! For more information call 661-1000, ext. 265, 266.
