Katz 'Mans
Celebration
Ryan Katz, son of Dr. Mar-
shall G. and Karen Katz, will
celebrate his bar mitzvah
Saturday morning at Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek.
Ryan shares his bar mitzvah
with his twin in the Soviet
Union, Nisim Anisimov of
Derbent.
In spite of dozens of letters
to Nisim, Ryan has received
no response. The Anisimov
family was initially refused
the right to emigrate in 1978
when the Soviets claimed
that Nisim's father, Rabo, a
laborer, had served in the ar-
my and therefore knew
military "secrets." Letters of
congratulations may be sent
to: Anisimov Family, Lenina

New York — The American
Jewish Joint Distribution
Committee (JDC) will imple-
ment a rehabilitation project
to assist Jamiaca in recover-
ing from Hurricane Gilbert,
announced Heinz Eppler,
president of JDC.
JDC's "Open Mailbox for
Jamaica," begun at first
report of the hurricane
damage, is receiving contribu-
tions of individuals and
organizations throughout the
United States. These con-
tributions will be matched by
the Jewish community of
Jamaica, which consists of on-
ly 300 people and dates back
to the 16th Century.
Working with the Jewish
community, JDC has begun
preparations to build reading
rooms for the University of
the West Indies (UWI) in
Jamaica. The campus has suf-
fered an estimated $11
million in damages. The
students of the UWI will be
the future leaders of Jamaica
and other Carribean nations,
and are in desperate need of
study space.
A Jamaican Jewish ar-
chitect from the community is
volunteering his professional
services for this project. Other
members of the Jewish com-
munity have made their
skills available in the
cooperative effort as well.
A group of low-income
Jamaican women being train-
ed in construction skills will
be employed by this
assistance project.

president of the Jamaican
Jewish community, com-
