an example, Sheppard

Werner, in a Sept. 23 letter-to-
the-editor, writes "— and
Winston very conveniently
leaves out important aspects
of the case as they are
detrimental to Pollard — that
he took money (I believe
$150,000) for his espionage
work." Unfortunately, there
are many facts about this case
which have not been revealed,
as there has been no trial,
making it difficult to judge
exactly what J. Pollard is
guilty of.
Too many, including Mr.
Werner, assume that Joseph
diGenova, as U.S. prosecutor,
and Caspar Weinberger, as
secretary of defense, have not
misled the American public
to believe the worst about the
Pollards. Clearly, there is
another side to this story. Mr.
Henderson has presented his
version of it in his book,
Pollard: The Spy's Story.
Based on bad legal advice,
the young Pollards pleaded
guilty, under duress, to the
charges brought against
them by the U.S. prosecutor,
precluding an open trial and
an airing of all the relevant
facts. (Compare, for example,
the handling of Pollard's case
with that of Oliver North's.)
Pleading guilty played right
into the hands of Messrs.
diGenova and Weinberger.
lbo much about this case re-
mains unknown to conclude,
as Mr. Werner has done, that
J. Pollard acted immorally .. .
Bernard Henderson refers
to the Pollard case as an
American Dreyfus story.
Perhaps it is, but the power-
ful presence of an Emila Zola,
to help right the wrongs of
this case, is missing.

Intermarriage
Article Hurt
I was appalled by the arti-
cle "Through the Back Door"
(Nov. 25). I was especially an- .
noyed by the title. As the son
of a Greek/German gentile
father and a Jewish mother,
I have a very' strong Jewish
identity; this is despite the at-
titudes I noticed within the
Jewish community while I
was growing up.
I had thought that with the
increase in intermarriage
(now roughly at 30 percent),
your newspaper would change
its xerophobic attitude. toward
accepting us as full-fledged
members within the coni-
munity. More of us (half-Jews)
are being raised Jewish than
before. So who had the gall to
suggest that we have an easy
way out of Judaism?
I have been called a Jew-boy
by gentiles; I have also been

called a Nazi by a Jewish kid
when he found out I had a
German Lutheran grand-
mother .. .
Those statistics by Egron
Mayer are incomplete. They
should include two other
groups: full-blooded Jews who
are affiliated with the Jewish
community, and full-blooded
Jews who are not.
When I was at the Univer-
sity of Michigan, I dealt with
many full-blooded Jews who
did not care about Judaism
and many half-Jews who had
strong Jewish identities. The
. community has to learn to ac-
cept the fact that we exist and
that many of us identify
ourselves as Jews — including
those of us with non-Jewish
mothers . ..

Knowing The Terms
Regarding "Back Door,-
David Holzel's article on
children of mixed marriages:
It's too bad some people enter-
tain such out-dated and racist
ideas about Jews. I would like
to assure them that full-
blooded Jews are not hooked-
nosed wimps.
The distribution of "athletic
prowess" among Jews mat-
ches that of the general
population; nasal morphology
in Jews shows the widest
possible range of variation.
Moreover, our tradition
teaches us that we define
ourselves through faith and
practice and not by physical
attributes.
