BRINGS YOU

the Jewish holidays, and how
Betty had gone to relatives
for Rosh Hashanah. A rabbi
had come and conducted ser-
vices for the Jewish residents,
but
not many attended because of
the 9:30 a.m. starting time."
Yom Kippur services were
scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
The two exchanged news
about their families, and
Levinson warned Betty she
would not be coming for a
while because she was going
on a trip.
In the hallway, the family
bumped into the other resi-
dent Levinson visits. Anna
was sitting in a wheelchair,
• feeling miserable with a cold.
She was not in the mood for
a lengthy visit, and Levinson
had to do most of the talking.
Trying to spark some
response from Anna, Levin-
son asked if she had attend-
ed the Rosh Hashanah ser-
vices, but she had not. Anna
likes to read, so they had a
short conversation about
books. Formerly a bingo
player, Anna no longer took
any interest in the activity, so
Levinson suggested she
should get involved in it
again as something to help
pass the time. Anna said she
would think about it.
Realizing Anna was not
feeling very communicative,
Levinson said goodbye, and
asked her daughter to say it
as well.
Children have been found to
be very positive and
therapeutic. They act as an
ice-breaker, and are a simple
source of conversation with
which many elderly can be
comfortable. Young children
are also relatively unafraid of
the elderly and the infirm.
Volunteer Gladys Karlin
sees residents at Lahser Hills
Nursing Center with a part-
ner Ronna Perlman.
"Originally we started with
three residents, but one of
them was so excited by our
visits she insisted we visit two
other ladies she knew to be
Jewish. None of our ladies are
bed-ridden. Three have dif-
ficulty following conversa-
tions, and two have trouble
with depression, so we are
constantly thinking of little
ways to cheer them up with
cookies, candy, or talking
about their families," said
Karlin.
"One of the ladies likes to

crochet, so we occasionally
bring her bits of yarn which
makes her terribly happy.
Each time we come she pulls
out her bag of yarn, which is
quite big because I think
everyone brings her some.
She shows us all the pieces
she's been working on.
"Our oldest lady is 92, and
