If the Church is wrong,
morally, religiously and
historically to appropriate the
Holocasut, it is imperative,
Roiphe feels, for Jews to
recognize and come to terms
with the event.
"Our survival as a people
depends upon what we do
with the Holocasut."
She goes on to detail some
of the complexities that face
Jews. "All of us have a
Holocaust memory. And we
have a desire for revenge. But
who can we take revenge on?"
On dead criminals? On old
men who hardly look like the
monsters they were? On non-
righteous gentiles?
"We have an anger with no
place to go," Roiphe says.
That unacknowledged
anger does not disappear.
Roiphe senses that much of it
is being expressed — in the
U.S. and Israel — by a new
toughness and aggression; in
a turn to the right political-
ly; in an unwillingness to
listen, to mediate, to
compromise.
"Force and power — so new
to Jews, so heady in its infan-
cy — may turn us into
something vicious and wild,"
Roiphe has written. "Must
history turn us simply into
another mad wolf that ter-
rifies others?"
Should we never speak to
Arafat ever, she asks. Should
we feel no compassion for the
Arab woman whose child was
shot in the back? Having
been betrayed so often is it
possible we may be betrayed
by our own lack of trust?
These are big questions,
and even if Jews disagree
with Roiphe — which they do,
she says — they must take her
questions seriously. Roiphe is
a writer, but more significant-
ly, she is a moralist, an ax-
iologist, an ethicist in the
best sense of the term.
Her exploration of Jewish
life is filled with burning
questions whose conse-
quences we can only guess.
The simplest and yet most
complicated question is one
Roiphe asked years ago and
continues to ask: "Are we still
Jews? Dare we not be?"
