Kirsch is planning a sequel,
tentatively titled State of the
Union, for which he said he
has "the beginning and the
end, but nothing in writing.
In the meantime, he's sold
publication rights for Oath of
Office to firms in Israel and
Japan and is negotiating with
publishers in Great Britain,
Germany, Switzerland and
Sweden.
Kirsch also is discussing a
contract to recreate the book
for a TV miniseries, working
on a second novel, Officer of
the Court, and answering the
inevitable question: "Are you
thinking of entering politics
yourself?"
No thanks, Kirsch said.
While serving as statewide
student coordinator for
Thomas Eagleton's bid for
Missouri senator, "I learned
that politics is very time-
consuming. I didn't want to
live that way," he said.
"Now I'm content with
writing about those things.
Writing about politics is my
Walter Mitty life."

A

lien is sweating as he
opens the trunk.
President-elect
Jonathan Starr is still out
cold in the laundry bag, but
will Patrolman Nyberg get too
nosey and start poking
around?
"Loose wire," the officer says,
trying to fix the tail light.
Then he turns to Allen.
"That's a helluva big bag."
"It's just sheets, pillowcases
and blankets," Allen tells him.
Then, in a moment of bravado,
volunteers, "but if you really
want to see it, I'll open the
bag."
The patrolman says that
won't be necessary and even
lets Allen go without a ticket.
Allen gets in the car and the
kidnappers begin to drive
off. They feel anxious, but
at least they've gotten away.
For now. ❑

Jewish Living

New York — The rituals of
Jewish living — from the

process of mourning — are
described in detail in The
Jewish Home: A Guide For
Jewish Living, published by
the Union of _ American
Hebrew Congregations.
Written by Rabbi Daniel B.
Syme, a vice president of the
UAHC, The Jewish Home
utilizes the question-and-
answer technique to explain
the how and why of Jewish
living at home, in the
synagogue and on joyous and
solemn occasions.
