Sara Lee Buys
Israeli Shares
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Sara Lee,
the giant Chicago-based pro-
ducer of frozen cakes and pies,
as well as L'Eggs pantyhose,
has acquired a 25.1 percent
stake in Delta-Galil
Industries Ltd., Israel's
largest manufacturer of
underwear.
The company paid $16.7
million for the shares and
won 11.51 percent of Delta
voting rights. Under the
agreement, Sara Lee has a
five-year option to buy
another $18.7 million worth
of the Israeli company.
If the option is exercised,
Sara Lee will hold 41.5 per-
cent of Delta's share capital
and 21.66 percent of its voting
rights. But Delta's president,
Dov Lautman, will retain his
controlling interest.
Sara Lee's effort to register
the L'Eggs trademark in Ku-
wait in 1982 resulted in a
$725,000 penalty in August
by the U.S. Commerce De-
partment imposed for alleg-
edly cooperating with the
Arab boycott against Israel.
Insecticides
Are Stabilized
Jerusalem — Scientists at
the Hebrew University Facul-
ty of Agriculture in Rehovot
have found a way to extend
the effectiveness of pesticides
which are unstable to light,
thus overcoming a basic defi-
ciency in the use of such
chemicals.
By absorbing the pesticide
on the surface of tiny clay par-
ticles together with an ade-
quate stabilizing organic
chemical, the pesticide can be
protected from the destruc-
tive effect of the sunlight as
a result of complicated
physical processes that occur
in the clay-organic system.
