Berman predicted an an-
nual campaign in 2008 of $3.5

dowment fund. "Our needs
will still outstrip our
resources," Berman said, and
the federations will be
challenged to reach Jews liv-
ing away from urban centers.
Jewish child care, youth
trips to Israel and Jewish pro-
grams on campus will be com-
monplace in 2008, Berman
said, adding that "everyone
will gain from a Jewish
establishment that is con-
tinental in scope and pur-
pose!'

Conference of Presidents of
Major American Jewish Or-
ganizations, with the result

tor of CJF's Washington of-
fice, said, "Make your plea
about 'Who Is A Jew' without
mugging [social services for]
little old ladies in Jerusalem.

At a press conference last
Thursday, Morton Kornreich,
national UJA chairman, said
he had requested a meeting
with Rabbi Menachem
Schneerson, the Lubavitcher
rebbe. Kornreich said he in-
tended to explain to the rebbe
how changing the law could
rupture many Diaspora Jews'
relations with Israel.
The 87-year-old Lubavitch
cited health reasons for
declining to meet with Kor-
nreich. Kornreich rejected an
invitation to meet with top
aides to the rebbe.
