Reaction to the column,
which appeared Oct. 19, was
"muted," said the Times un-
til two weeks ago, when a full-
page ad assailing The Review
appeared in the school's daily
student newspaper, The Dart-
mouth. The ad was signed by
four associate faculty deans
at Dartmouth.
A subsequent editorial in
The Dartmouth charged that
Garrett's column was anti-
Semitic. "The fact that Presi-
dent Freedman is Jewish
raises the stakes in a rather
frightening way," stated The
Dartmouth's editors. "The
comparison of the Dartmouth
president to Hitler is so wild-
ly inappropriate that one can
only assume insidious
motives?'
The Review's editor-in-chief,
Harmeet Dhillon, denied that
Garrett's column was anti-
Semitic. The column, she
said, was intended to compare
"liberal fascism" with other
forms of fascism and was not
meant to trivialize the
Holocaust.
