that it was an Israeli decision.

considered withholding his

changed his mind, however,

N

ew York — Battered
Jewish wives in
Canada, victims for
decades of the myth that
Jewish husbands never
physically abuse their
spouses, finally have shelters
under Jewish auspices
available to them.
The first of two such centers
in Canada opened last June
in Toronto, according to a
report in the September-
October B'nai B'rith Women's
World by Elena Kuperstein, a
contributing editor.
The Alternative Short Term
Emergency Housing project is
a modest step, "a place to go
when home is no longer safe,"
according to the report.
The product of "three years
of intensive research, plann-
ing and fund-raising," the
housing project is a rented
two-bedroom apartment,
located near schools, shopp-
ing and transportation. It has
a kosher kitchen, a crib,
several beds and a security
system.
The other facility, schedul-
ed to open in December in
Montreal, is a much larger
facility, according to Lola
Mendelson, director of
development for Canadian
National Council of Jewish
Women.

Mendelson said the 20-bed
Montreal facility, named
Auberg Shalom Por Femmes
(Inn of Welcome to Women),
will be open for all women
needing shelter from abusive
husbands, but it is clearly
meant primarily for Jewish
victims.
Like the housing project,
the Inn of Welcome will have
a kosher kitchen. Mendelson
said the facility is being staff-
ed to provide legal and
medical referral services and
child-care and professional
counseling. She said all
Jewish customs will be
observed.
The Canadian Jewish
women's council raised more
than $1 million (Canadian)
for the Inn of Welcome, which
is being housed in a building
donated by Mr. and Mrs.
Leonard Ellen, local Jewish
philanthropists.
Aneta Stecher, Canadian
B'nai B'rith Women staff per-
son on the committee for the
Toronto shelter, said that
prior to the opening of the
shelter, battered wives,
Jewish and non-Jewish, could
flee to public shelters.
But Jewish women did not
like the shelters and found
other means to take them-
selves and their children
away from the fists of batter-
ing husbands.
So far, two families have us-
