LOCAL NEWS I ghe Missionary's Mailings To Target Local Jews DAVID HOLZEL Staff Writer A local "Hebrew- Christian" group is planning a mass mail- ing of missionary literature next month to the Jewish community. The literature will in- troduce Jews to Jesus and of- fer free copies of the New Testament Gospel of Matthew in English and Yiddish, ac- cording to Loren Jacobs of Shema Yisrael, a Southfield- based Hebrew-Christian organization. Some 30,000 Jewish homes are to receive the mailings, Jacobs said. He would not disclose the sources of his mailing list. "Hebrew Christians" or "Messianic Jews" are Jews who believe that Jesus is the messiah. They declare tradi- tional Judaism invalid and have been embraced and sup- ported by evangelical Chris- tian groups who see them as a means of proselytizing the Jewish community. Batya and Ronnie Schreiber, local Jews who are opposing missionary efforts, suggest that those who receive the Shema Yisrael mailings mark the unopened envelope, "Objectionable material, return to sender," and have the post office return the mailing. They said that recipients may be taken off Shema Yisrael's mailing list by com- pleting postal service form No. 2150. The Shema Yisrael mailing and its envelope must be included with the form. Shema Yisrael's project was publicized in a recent newsletter of the Lederer Messianic Ministries of Baltimore. Lederer Executive Director Barry Rubin re- quested financial aid from his readers for the project. "Pray for this bold outreach and if you would like to have a part in it, indicate your ex- tra gift on the enclosed response coupon," Rubin wrote. "We're stepping out on faith with Loren on this!"
