One died and four were in- jured Sunday when their ar- mored personnel carrier, on a routine exercise, plummeted 10 feet off the road into a dry riverbed and overturned. One Monday morning, Pvt. Itzhak Halfon was given a 21-day jail term for breach of discipline. On hearing the sentence, he grabbed an M-16 rifle, wounded a young soldier and fatally shot Capt. Yair Levy of Holon in the chest. Halfon then rushed from the building and shot himself to death. Neither of his two victims was in any way con- nected with his trial and sentence. 'Protests Are Hysterical' Jerusalem (JTA) — The new head of the ultra-Orthodox Agudat Yisrael party has called Diaspora protests over impending "Who Is A Jew" legislation hysterical. Rabbi Moshe Zeev Feldman insisted in an interview that Jews in America and elsewhere "don't know what is being talked about. We are defending the Jewish people." Feldman's remarks demonstrated the strong im- pact in political and diplomatic circles of moun- ting Diaspora pressure over the legislation, which would further delegitimize non- Orthodox Judaism in Israel.
