I LETTERS I YOU'RE COVERED With Our T-Shirt! Continued from Page 6 brance of my past. During the Holocaust I survived in Poland by pretending to be a devout Catholic. I was in a monastery. Is there no end to in- tolerance? The State of Israel, the fulfillment of the dream of my generation, will discriminate against my son because of his bloodline? Will the Orthodox rabbis, through their political power, impose their beliefs upon other Jews? The answer is yes, if we let them. Dr. Emanuel Tanay Detroit PNC Actions Were Meaningless That enthusiasm for the Palestine National Council (PNC) actions is already on the wane should come as not surprise when one considers how meaningless they really were. The PNC accepted 242 with the same interpretation that the Saudis did years ago — namely that while legitimate states have the right to secure borders under 242, the Jewish state, as a bastard state, en- joys no such right. In fact, since the PNC regards all Greater Israel (both sides of the "Green Line") to be "oc- cupied territory" they read 242 as a demand for Israeli withdrawal into the sea. In addition, PLO spokesmen have already ex- plained on American televi- sion that while the PLO re- nounces terrorism, activity will continue "within oc- cupied lands" — in other words all of Israel. CHILD SMALL FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 1988 J PNC Actions Are Welcomed New Jewish Agenda, which is committed to a flourishing Israel living at peace with its neighbors, welcomes the steps taken by the Palestine Na- tional Council at Algiers this week toward a resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Unfortunately, they are be- ing discounted, by official voices and commentators in Israel and the United States. However, we would like to point out that the PNC's ac- tions continue a Palestinian trend towards moderation, realism and reconciliation at a time when, regrettably, Israel and the United States have been moving in the op- posite direction. Specifically, the PNC has: • committed itself, for the first time, to formal accep- tance of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; • committed itself to pursu- ing a peaceful solution on the basis of United Nations resolutions 242 and 338; • committed itself to negotiate with Israel in the context of an international conference; • rejected "terrorism in all of its forms" (while apparent- ly restricting its right to resist Israeli occupation to the occupied territories) .. . Those who genuinely desire peace will take these resolu- tions as constituting a long- awaited breakthrough in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Of course, further steps must be taken. We expect that a more explicit recognition, indeed, formal mutual recognition, as well as a resolution of the pro- blem of the status of Jerusalem, will emerge from the proposed international conference .. . Ronald Aronson Kenneth Knoppow New Jewish Agenda of Detroit 'Ivan' Exhausted Due Process Sister Ann Gillen refuses to accept John Demjanjuk's guilt by saying "evidence was likely fabricated" (Letters, Nov.11). Demjanjuk received a fair trial not only in Israel but in the United States. He exhausted due process in both countries. To reexamine some evidence, the S.S. tatoo was removed from his underarm, survivors from the camps recognized beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is "Ivan The Terrible," and the SS card in evidence was not a forgery, proved so by the United States and Israeli experts. From the thousands of Ukrai- nians who served in the Nazi army mass murdering the Jews, not one came forward to say he is not "Ivan The Ibrri- ble." She drops obscure names in her support but we do not know their moral or political views. This reminds me of the trial of Adolf Eichmann, who claimed to be a simple railroad clerk. There were also some people who swore he was what he claimed to be.
