Japan-Israel
Ties Hit

New York — Political and
economic relations between
Israel and Japan have im-
proved in recent years but
Tokyo still adheres to the
Arab economic boycott of
Israel and conducts a one-
sided foreign policy strongly
favoring the Arabs and the
PLO, according to Jacob
Cohen, former Israel am-
bassador to Japan.
Cohen, who left his post in
Tokyo earlier this year and is
now a member of Israel's
delegation to the U.N.
General Assembly, made the
remarks at a session of the
national executive committee
of the Anti-Defamation
League of B'nai B'rith.
He said Tokyo openly sup-
ports the Palestine Liberation
Organization, including for-
mal recognition of the
organization which main-
tains an "active information
office" in Tokyo.
The Japanese government
has maintained close rela-
tions with Syria and Libya,
despite both nations' involve-
ment with terrorist activities.

Ashkenazic
Rabbi Installed

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Rabbi
Israel Lau was installed
recently as Tel Aviv's Ash-
kenazi chief rabbi, in a three-
hour ceremony that marked a
victory for liberal elements in
the religious establishment
at a time of growing concern
over religious coercion.
Lau, a Holocaust survivor,
had been chief rabbi of Ne-
tanya. His accession was
delayed for two years because
of objections by the Chief Rab-
binate over the presence of a
woman on the Tel Aviv
Religious Council that
selected him.
The Chief Rabbinate
backed down only after the
Supreme Court ruled that
Lau's appointment was
legitimate.
Rabbi Lau, though Ortho-
dox, is known to have a
liberal personal outlook.
