The French Gourmet Authentic Lebanese Food son) in me," says Winkler. After all, Abbie as a physi- cian is a success; as an in- dividual, he needs emergency care. "Well, when I was younger," recalls Winkler, "I used to feel very rigid, as if there were a web keeping me down. I had to suppress myself a lot." He is irrepressible now but will not soon forget those stifl- ing days. "Abbie is a man who was suppressed but who finds a release. Acting was my release." Winkler was able to break through his web, kicking away the detritus that dangl- ed from his every move. "On stage I could do things physically that I could not do in my pedestrian life," he says. He learned to walk away from detractors. But Winkler's smile is a stark reminder that not all has gone so smoothly for this smoothie of an actor. First making his mark as one of the tough guys in the film Lords of Flatbush, Winkler can lord it over his parents now if he wanted to. But, of course, he doesn't want to. "My parents had to begrudingly accept my deci- sion of what I wanted to do," he says fihnly. "I had to carve out my own way in the world." What he has sculpted suits him fine; indeed, talent is always an enviable tool of the trade. After film roles in Heroes and The One and On- ly, Winkler acted on his im- pulse to direct and produce. In 1979, he won the prestigious Humanitas Prize for produc- ing the documentary "Who Are the DeBolts and Where Did They Get 19 Kids?" Winkler's production com- pany produced the ABC-TV award-winning "Afterschool Special," "Run, Don't Walk." He seems to have taken that special's titular sugges- tion. Indeed, Winkler's career has vroomed along with the finesse and speed of the motorcycle he commandeered on "Happy Days." His has been a career careening from one critically lauded project to another,in- cluding an Emmy Award for his direction of CBS' "All the Kids Do It." Not all the kids back home in his New York neighbor- hood could have done it the Winkler way. "I live by my in- stincts," he says. And it has taken guts to do what he has done, to take on meaningful projects that other, more commercial, pro- ducers say they would like to do but don't. Of course, Winkler has nothing against commercial OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK Mondays Thru Thursdays 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 12 Mid.
