`Church Didn't
Stop Nazis'

Vienna (JTA) — A Catholic
lay leader last week took his
church to task for its failure
to speak up, much less aid
Jews, during the pogroms of
the Nazi era in Catholic
Austria.
Dr. Paul Schulmeister, pres-
ident of Catholic Action,
addressed several hundred
people who packed the Vien-
na Jewish community center
observe the 50th anniversary
of Kristallnacht.
For Austrians this has been
the 50th anniversary of not
only Kristallnacht, but of the
Anschluss, or annexation, as
well. Schulmeister stressed
the guilt Catholics must bear
by not having resisted the
Nazis when they devastated
temples and harassed and
killed Jews.
To remain silent is not
enough for Christians today.
We must remember what led
to Auschwitz, Schulmeister
said.

Whether he likes it or not,
the new United States presi-
dent will find himself grasp-
ing the lit fuse of the Arab-
Israeli dispute when he ad-
dresses himself to the pro-
blem of regional conflicts, for
he will encounter strong
pressure not only from the
Soviet Union but also from
West European leaders to
propel Israel toward a more
accommodating position.
Almost one year after the
start of the Palestinian upris-
ing, however, Israel has never
been in a less accommodating
mood. An invitation to an
international conference,
however elegantly phrased, is
certain to be met by an
equally elegant rejection
from the government of Yit-
zhak Shamir — and this time
without the discomfiting dis-
sent of Shimon Peres, his
erstwhile coalition partner.
Moreover, the specter of
Moscow waiting in the wings
will doubtless heighten the
resolve of the Israeli leader
and add to his determination
to say no.
