A GRAND GIFT IDEA
"The thing is, with those
rapid promotions, a lot of ma-
jor league players have great
natural ability, but they don't
know how to really play the
game."
Sherry said one of the most
enjoyable years he spent in
baseball was 1985, when he
was a minor league pitching
coach (as his brother Larry
and Koufax are doing now).
"With the rookie league
team, the kids were so eager
they'd just sponge up any in-
formation you would give
them. It was really gratifying
to mold them for the future,
start them off the right way.
"In the majors, you usually
don't make that many sugges-
tionsor changes in pitchers'
styles. You just make sure
they're following their
established patterns."
When it came to his own
son, Mike, Sherry noted,
"When I was with Santa Bar-
bara, he was on the field all
the time, and later he was
always my bat boy. When he
started to play in high school
he was all right, but he
thought he should be the
best, because I'd been a major
leaguer.
"One day he came to me
and said, 'Dad, would you feel
bad if I didn't play?' and I told
him 'Mike, it's your life.' "
Mike is now an electrical
engineer. Sherry also has two
married daughters, Cindy
and Pam, and two grand-
children. 0

ROUND UP
Harrison In
Football Semis
The Farmington Harrison
High School football team is
just two steps away from a
state Class B title. The 11-0
Hawks, ranked No. 1, meet
Auburn Hills Avondale, also
11-0, at Flint Atwood
Stadium at 1:30 p.m. on
Saturday.
"We match up well" with
Avondale, says Harrison
coach John Herrington.
"Defensively we'll do a good
job against them. They have
a lot of speed. But I think
we'll be able to shut 'em
down!"
Harrison All-State quarter-
back Mill Coleman will be a
key player Saturday, says
Herrington. "They've got a
good secondary, and we've got
to be able to throw the ball
decently and also establish
some kind of run." Another
key to the Hawks' passing
game is senior receiver Bryan
Waldron. "He's outstanding,"
says Herrington. "I think
that he's the best receiver in
the state."
While Harrison has ridden
on top of the polls all season,
they shocked many observers
when they trounced a top-10
Class A team, Westland John
Glenn, 45-7 last month. "All
season we've had kind of big
victories," says Herrington.
"But the John Glenn game
did kind of shock us because
they're such a good team.
"So far we haven't given up
any points in the playoffs, but
we know there could be a
tough game coming along the
road at any time. But the
team's really confident."
Saturday's winner plays for
the state title on Nov. 26 at
the Silverdome.
