Now we-can see it before
you can feel it. When it's no
bigger than the dot on this
pa e.
And when it's 90% cur-
able. With the best chance
of saving the breast.
The trick is catching it
early. And that's exactly
what a mammogram can do.
A mammogram is a sim-
ple x-ray that s simply the
best news yet for detecting
breast cancer. And saving •
lives.
If you're over 35, ask
your doctor about
mammography.

Give yourself the
chance of a lifetime.-

his is not a letter, but
a plea for action. A
killer hurricane has
formed and unless we do
something, Israel may be
swept into the Mediterra-
nean. The storm warnings
are flying in gale force winds,
and we need to do whatever
we can to limit the damage.
While our attention has
been focused for months on
the Arab violence in the ad-
ministered territories, the
main event has slipped by
almost unnoticed. The Arab
countries have been arming
themselves voraciously with
some of the most
sophisticated and powerful
weapons that money can buy.
Technically advanced, inter-
mediate-range ballistic
missiles have been pouring
into the arsenals of Israel's
implacable enemies like there
was no tomorrow.
The Syrians have been
given deadly accurate,
Russian-made missiles that
can hit every population
center in Israel. Plus they
have stockpiles of chemical
weapons that can deliver
mass death. The Saudis are
being supplied with the latest
Chinese missiles that can
strike anywhere in Israel.
These babies can be fitted
with nuclear warheads. This
one-two punch poses a grave,
if not imminent, danger.
Add to this scenario the fact
that the bloody Iran-Iraq war
is grinding to a halt. This will
leave Israel vulnerable to
Iraq's one-million man army
which is equipped with the
best arms from every corner
of the world. It has a battle-
tested air force loaded with
top of the line warplanes. Not
only does Iraq possess in-
termediate "range ballistic
missiles and chemical
weapons, it has shown little
restraint in using them. The
noose is tightening.
The Arabs mean to destroy
Israel, ' and they have the
means to do it. Hatred of Jews
in general, and Israel in par-
ticular is the driving force of
their societies. They have
been obsessed for over 40
years with annihilating the
Jewish state, but have never
been able to pull it off. Until
now the Arabs have been
unable to nail the coffin shut,

despite the fact that they've
always enjoyed a vast quan-
titative superiority over
Israel and a steadily closing
qualitative gap. Then why is
it a whole new ball game
now?
During the past 40 years of
a Jewish homeland there was
always international in-
surance for Israel's existence.
The Arabs' unlimited hatred
of Israel and their desire to
exterminate the Jewish state
has never waned.
However, their actions have
been deterred. not just by fear
of Isralei retaliation, but
ultimately by fear of foreign
intervention.
That fear is now gone. The
strategy has been to isolate
Israel militarily, diplomati-
cally and politically. To that
end the United Nations has
been turned into a beehive of
anti-Zionist activity. The
media sings a shrill anti-
Israeli tune. Public opinion
polls in the United States
reflect a frightening erosion
of support after many months
of Israel-bashing throughout
the land. Now one of our two
political parties which was
always a bastion of pro-Israel
sentiment has suddenly
backed away from its tradi-
tional sympathetic stance.

It doesn't take much im-
agination to see what's com-
ing. When the Arabs perceive
the U.S. defensive shield over
Israel has been lowered, they
will attack. Only this time
when the Arabs attack, Israel
will be standing alone. Even
if Israel doesn't perish in the
first-strike missile barrage
and chemical rain, the
casualties will be horrifying.
The ensuing battles would
mean the end of the Jewish
state. That would be the
beginning of the end of
Jewish life everywhere. One
more species bites the dust,
and make no mistake, extinc-
tion is forever.
What can we do? In order to
respond effectively we must
understand the seriousness of
the situation. Time is short,
but the referee hasn't counted
us out yet. First we have to
pick ourselves off the mat.
Then we need to launch a
counter-attack which could be
called, Operation CHIN-UP.
C is for Campaign. It is
necessary to reaffirm our
commitment to the UJA-
Federation campaign. Sup-
port for our communal in-
stitutions here and for social
services in Israel is a concrete
demonstration of our commit-
ment to the continued ex-
