Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel is
chirping over getting the bird
— to the tune of $9.5 million.
Bird is the acronym for
Binational Industrial
Research and Development
Foundation, a joint
American-Israeli venture. It
plans to invest in 19 new pro-
jects in Israel during the first
half of 1989.
Ed Mlaysky, executive
director of Bird, stressed at a
news conference in Jerusalem
last week that "perhaps more
important than the numbers
is the high quality of the
American companies that
will be involved with Israeli
companies in the projects."
They include Westinghouse,
GTE Spacenet, Computer
Associates, Stratus Com-
puters, KLA Instruments and
Napco Security Systems.
The Israeli companies in-
volved are Scitex, Fibronics,
Luz, IBS and Degem Systems.
Bird was established in
1977 to encourage coopera-
tion between high technology
companies in the United
States and Israel. It assumes
half the costs of all the pro-
jects it approves.
Bird's annual income of $9
million comes from the in-
terest on endowments of $110
million provided by the two
governments and from
royalties from successful
projects.
