Abraham said Israel Presi-
dent Chaim Herzog's concept
of peace is for the violence to
end and "everybody to go
home"; Knesset Member
Geula Cohen of the rIbchiyah
Party believes in "the peace of
the cemetery" — she once
said that Palestinians should
be killed just so they would
know Israel is serious,
Abraham claimed; and Kach
leader Meir Kahane thinks
peace will be achieved only
when all Arabs leave Israel
and the territories.
Abraham said he sees two
- sides to the Middle East con-
flict: Israel and the Arab
states, and Israel and the
Palestinians.
He said the former does not
present a serious hurdle to

'Israeli leadership
doesn't want
Palestinian
► recognition'

peace — even between Syria
and Israel.
But Palestinians and
Israelis share the same land,
Abraham said. "And the most
rational, sober solution to
that problem is to allow each
people to establish national
self-determination!'
Most nations support the
two-state solution, Abraham
said, but the "Israeli
establishment" and the
► United States continue to op-
pose it.
"And Americans and
American Jews bear an awful
lot of responsibility for that
(position)" he said.
Abraham cited the U.S.
•-• government's financial and
military aid to Israel, but said
this has come at a cost to
Israel.
"The United States has
turned Israel into a military
Sparta," Abraham said,
▪ recalling the ancient Greek
military city. "It (Israel) takes
the king's shilling, and
therefore must do its bidding."
Yet without that support,
"Israel would really have to
sober up," Abraham said.
"Israeli leaders know that
without U.S. leaders, they

couldn't do anything!"

According to Abraham,
"Palestinians are willing to
accept the partition plan with
1967 borders" — thus, sever-
▪ ing from Israel the West
Bank, Gaza and east
Jerusalem. "And that's a big,
big compromise on their
part!'

Even George Habash, head
of the rejectionist Popular
Front for the Liberation of
Palestine, will back the
Palestine National Council's
decision this week to
recognize United ' Nations
Resolution 242, Abraham
said.
Resolution 242, passed after
the 1967 war, implies recogni-
tion of Israel. It supports "the
sovereignty, territorial in-
tegrity and political in-
dependence of every state in
the area!'
The results could be
disasterous if Israel and
Washington ignore the PNC
declaration, Abraham said.
He said "those Palestinians
calling for peace will be swept
aside," which could
precipitate World War III.
"It's not going to be a war
like in 1967 and 1973 with
people at the front and others
back at home," Abraham said.
"And there's no excuse for
tumbling into that when
you've got a large segment of
the Palestinian population
and a large segment of the
Israeli population willing to
come to terms?'
Members of the audience
suggested that an important
step in initiating Middle East
peace negotiations is for
Palestine Liberation
Organization leader Yassir
Arafat to recognize Israel's
right to exist.
Abraham quickly dismissed
this idea, saying it would
have been like President Jim-
my Carter accepting
Ayatollah Khomeini during
the hostage crisis.
"You do that," he said, "and
you look like a fool!'
In any case, "Israeli leader-
ship doesn't want Palestinian
recognition!'
He also saw no credence in
the position that the West
Bank and Gaza provide Israel
with security, saying, "occu-
pying a people doesn't give
you security!'
Abraham predicted a
breakdown in the Israel-
Egyptian peace. Once again,
he pointed the finger of blame
at Israel.
"The Israeli army is
already envisioning fighting
Egypt again;' he said. Israel
has "pushed the outer limits
of how much the Egyptian ar-
my can tolerate!'
He said a strong anti-Israel
sentiment pervades Egypt.
Egyptians want peace,
Abraham said, but are
plagued by this question of
Israel: "Why do you keep
treating the Palestinians this
way?"
