FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 1988 354 6060 - • • • • Weddings Bar Mitzvahs Parties Meetings patterns of the eighties are a lot different than those of yesteryear. "Today people are more in- dependent," he says. "Women's roles have chang- ed. They are more interested in somebody other than the guy next door. They have higher expectations!" Gallatin says there is no one particular place to meet a possible mate, but that peo- ple should try and meet "wherever they happen to be!" Gallatin recommends dances, department stores, grocery stores and bars. "Whether it's a person in a bar, a grocery store or any other location, most of the time you're not going to meet the person of your dreams," he says, "but all you need to do is focus in one one person." He says bars are a good place to meet people because it makes no difference "if you see a person in a bar that in- terests you?" he questions. "If you're attracted to that per- son, so what if it's in a bar. "What's important is the quality of that person, not where it is," he says. "Forget that it's been labeled as a `meat market! ". Gallatin says dating is the same everywhere. "If you're in California, they tell you it's better in New York; if you're in Milwaukee, they tell you it's better in Michigan!' he says. "Wherever you're at, you've got to get the conver- sation started." Gallatin says that striking up a conversation doesn't always work. Most of the time, he says, you may find yourself being rejected. • "If you do what I say in Lover Shopping, use good common sense, know how to say 'no, and learn to live with rejection!' he explains. "You'll meet more people and you'll sooner find the person you're searching for!' Society needs self-help books because, Gallatin says "most people's knowledge of meeting and relating is pathetic. Even doctors and lawyers, they don't know how to ask questions, ask for a phone number let alone go out and have a good time. "We are not taught you're completely on your own." "Where are we supposed to meet people, it's not in our genetic code, it's in these books." Gallatin says that the big- gest problem for , men is ap- proaching women, while women have "more specific, serious problems." He says that most women don't like to initiate a conversation. "This is why women need to flirt," he says. "They don't do it enough because they're worrying too much about what other people are think- ing." He says that women look for men who really pay attention to them, while men tend to look for an attractive physical appearance. "Women are more in- terested in sensitivity, and a little less concerned about a man's looks," he says. ❑ Social Singles Chanukah Party The Social Singles (Jewish Men and Women ages 40-55) of the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit invite you to attend a Chanukah Party on Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in room 239 at the Maple/Drake Building.
