I B'NAI MITZVAH I HEBREW MEMORIAL CHAPEL is proud to sponsor 2 ship and consider themselves Israeli citizens forced to reside in the U.S.S.R. Mrs. Chernobilsky teaches Hebrew and the family is preparing themselves for liv- ing in Israel. During this past year, Mrs. Cohen, a teacher at Thomp- son Middle School in Southfield, has written to Mrs. Chernobilsky in Russian and in Hebrew, with the help of her students. To date, she has received no confirmation that her letters have been delivered. 8th Grader Shares Rite Ilana Beth Rosenbaum, an eighth grader at Hillel Day School, will be called to the Torah in honor of her bat mitzvah this Shabbat morn- ing at Congregation B'nai Moshe. Ilana will symbolical- ly share this occasion with Irina Knokh of Leningrad. Irina is the daughter of Vladimir and Asya Knokh. Knokh is a radio engineer, and Mrs. Knokh is a music teacher. Irina, who has received prizes for some of her musical compositions, passed her music school exams in 1983. The Knokhs have a special friend living in Lod, Israel. The Knokh family first ap- plied for exit visas in 1974. They have had repeated refusals since February 1975. "Secrecy" is the reason listed for these refusals. Despite many setbacks, including searches by the KGB, Knokh and his family continue to fight for their rights. He has even given material help and advice to other refuseniks over the years, and he has become one of the main teachers of Hebrew in Len- ingrad. In 1979, he renounc- ed his Soviet citizenship as a protest against official anti-Semitism. Ilana has written many times to Irina and has sent her an invitation to her bat mitzvah service and celebra- tion. She has not yet receiv- ed a reply. --I LOCAL NEWS Imm Adoption Topic Of Discussion Child and Parent Services Support Group will present a panel discussion on "Talking to Your Children About Adop- tion" on Tuesday in Handleman Hall at Temple Beth El at 7 p.m. For information, call Child and Parent Services Support Group, 646-7790.
