My eldest son played soccer one season under the direc- tion of Mark Phillips and I am appalled that simply because Mr. Phillips may not have chosen the most ap- propriate words when inter- viewed ("kick ass" and "goyim"), he should be crucified and his intentions misconstrued. Those who really know Mark Phillips are aware of his desire to see that all of our children are afforded the op- portunity to learn the game of soccer and have fun without the primary emphasis on winning. Furthermore, we all know that the ROYSA teams en- compass not only Jews, but blacks, Moslems, and any other child who wants to play. I disagree with Mr. Larkey in his remark that "the tenor of Mr. Phillips' comments gives a false impression that Jews receive special treatment." Mark Phillips should be corn- mended for his efforts. The circumstances of need which gave birth to Yiddish during the time of eastern European enlightenment no longer exist. Present-day ins- tant communication, mostly in English, has more than adequately superseded the ar- tificiality of Yiddish, if perhaps not with the same degree of soulful expression which, regrettably, is lost in translation. But there are other reasons to be cautious: First, a very large propor- tion of Jews in the world to- day were never exposd to Yid- dish and neither were their forebears. This applies especially to the Sephardim whose one-time lingua fran- ca, Ladino, is thankfully relegated to the annals of history. Second, the average Israeli citizen draws a disdainful association of Yiddish with the aged elitist Israeli establishment of eastern European origin, and worse, fears it as the badge and hallmark of the despised Charedim who speak Yiddish because to them modern Hebrew is Chilul Hashem (a desecration of God's Name) . . . Like classic Greek or Latin, Yiddish might be studied for its historical and, perhaps, literary interest. But please, do not make the common- mistake of equating the knowledge of Yiddish with yiddishkeit, the universal Jewish soul. To do so is to regard those who don't know and have no background in Yiddish condescendingly as being less than Jewish. I have Israeli friends who resent this attitude, and so do I. Richard Braun Asheville, N.C. Headline Was Sensationalized Over the past several years I have been highly critical of our local daily newspapers for printing sensationalized headlines which have little or nothing to do with the actual story. Unfortunately, this has been particularly true regar- ding Israel. Imagine my chagrin to read on Page 5 of the Nov. 4 issue of The Jewish News a blazing headline, "Germans Rap Shoah Studies." The story talks about an American neo- Nazi political action commit- tee. Given the tragic history of Nazi Germany, such a misleading and declaiming headline seems to me to be both inappropriate and beneath your normal stan- dards of accuracy. Rev. James R. Lyons Director, Ecumenical Institute for Jewish-Christian Studies NEWS Papp Blends Yiddish, Theater New York (JTA) — Joseph Papp, founder of the Public Theater and the New York Shakespeare Festival, has found a way to blend his pas- sion for the theater with his love for the Yiddish language. This year's opening season of the Joseph Papp Yiddish Theater will mark a new theatrical venture between Papp and the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, the foremost Yiddish institution in the world. This collaborative effort wil draw on and develop the creative energies of young playwrights, actors and directors.
